Gabers, I tow my single cab (you do weigh a bit more than me though) on my trailer with my gmc. I need to add a huge tranny cooler, but it tows it bitchin. Ithink I might be 4.10 gearing.

Once towing the 5.3 would probably be the worst on MPG and may have the weakest tranny for towing purposes. IMO

but yes it could tow it and be fine doing it!

Guy at work just bought one and towed a 23' travel trailer to moab and got around 10 mpg. He said power wasn't an issue. I think he trailer weighs around 4k empty. I can ask if you are serious. The ecotec 5.3 doesn't do bad on mpg, but around town your still looking at 13-17. Mix some freeway in to get the ecotec to work you'll bump 20. should get over 20 pure highway.

You can register a semi truck with a self contained sleeper as a RV. My motorhome is straight piped with a smog pump.

This is just a chassis cab. No sleeper so I am not sure. Like 20K GVW

Thats what I figured, but an overhead camper would make it a RV. I've heard from a reliable source (can't remember details of how) but you can or used to be able to put a shell on your truck and register as a SUV because it wasn't an open bed. I know the person said he would be ticketed if caught with the camper off though.

My best guess for a work truck would be 17. Just my opinion I'm basing it off of friends that own chevys.

Its basically like this one. Lighter duty. No special license etc. It has the water delivery box now but would be flatbed for a tow rig. To add a camper to it etc wouldn't be worth all the headache just to get around the red tape

That would be commercial vs personal wouldnt it?

I know every pickup is a commercial vehicle technically, put a shell on it and its a non-commercial vehicle, then your registration is less. What a crock.

Didnt know about the SUV thing, never heard about that.

Your right Jason, I just explained it kinda jacked up.

SUV is just non-commerical. My excursion registration is $109. Its not SUV specific, I was just saying they charge you car price.

If his business was in a smog except area would it still matter? If you purchased property in the mtns or desert and the truck/business was registered there, would you fall under the law since the truck wouldn't be smogged? or does commerical get smogged/inspected regardless?

Location does not matter. Commercial use. They dont "smog" them they require the new particulate filters or an engine 2010 or newer. That includes tractors, pumps farm implements, everything. Its even required on out of state trucks that come into Ca. unless of course it's coming from the southern border, they get a free pass

OK, so if your truck runs right and you don't have baja plates they are just going to pull you over inspect and ticket.

That Sucks, I thought it was a smog thing.

On a side note they make 5.9 cummings swap kits for the ford v10.

I'm sure the commercial inspection CHP's will be targeting the older vehicles. The CARB website says its up to a $10, 000 fine for non-compliance after Jan 1, 2015.
Pretty sure they think they will make money off of it, hard to bleed a guy for a fine when you put him out of business though. Dumb fuckers have no idea how much tax revenue they will be losing by putting so many little guys out of business.
    California business as usual

Looks like his only options are-move out of california-buy a newer truck- or drive in less than 5k a year until 2021..

    Sorry man

Ya, its a done deal for him. I am just trying to sort out if it can still be used for personal/recreational use and not have to comply with CARB regs.. These types of trucks are gonna be selling cheap in the next few months and would make killer rigs to put our trucks on and still be able to tow a travel trailer if wanted.

My buddy looked into the RV part of it and just said the tires had to be a certain size or smaller and had to clearly state not for hire.
