Screw getting an auto for the wife. The Tacoma is the easiest manual trans I've ever driven and it'd be perfect to teach her on.

Personally, the only reason I'd get an auto over a manual is if I planned to do tons of towing. Sadly, though, it's becoming damn near impossible to find most cars/trucks with manual transmissions anymore.

I have a manual my dad handed my truck down to me and i had to learn it, but I'm so glad I did because I absolutely love it and I can say I can do something that a lot of kids these days cant :D

All my previous toyota trucks were manual & trouble free.
My 06 is auto mainly because my left knee doesn't like to bend anymore. I did test drive both & preferred the auto, the shift points in the newer gen were much different than my previous trucks and would have taken some getting use to. After almost 36k, the auto is nice & smooth. I like it.

YES!!! It is!! I know it's not a sports car, but the manual really stinks - not smooth at all.

What the hell? Its easier to put an automatic into neutral than it is a manual, you act like you can't even do it, pop the stick up a quarter of an inch with no clutch? You also have park and you don't have to put your foot on anything...

IDK. All my other cars were manuals, I planned on a 6 speed tacoma but after test driving one I just didn't care for the feel of it on this truck. Haven't regretted the auto one bit.

Poll shows an almost 50/50 split. I never drove a manual truck before so I cant say, does a stick truck drive as similar as a car with 5speed transimission?

I've driven manuals all my life and originally wanted a manual.

However, when I test drove the manual at the dealership, I didn't like it. The Rpm's stayed UP when your foot is off the clutch. I thought something was wrong with the truck and the salesman said, "That's normal"

    No THanks!

So, aside from that....the towing package with the tranny cooler, & oil cooler was a benefit to getting the Auto.

    No regrets at all.

Everytime I read people complaining about their clutches - I smile.

Well since your car info says "future supercharged 4x4", why are you asking about fuel economy?

Both of my prior trucks were manual and i love driving manual. my other car, I mean now my sons car is a manual. I was looking for a manual but my new truck had everything i wanted but was a auto. I really enjoy driving it, no complaints. well i still have the erge to shift, pressing the clutch that is not there - haha. The best thing i love about the auto is i now have a car starter, and i been wondering how i have lived so long with out it. that a my rear view camera. oh god, im getting old

Auto. Better gas mileage, in my opinion better offroad, better in traffic (I do not buy the previous arguments re manuals better in traffic, no way!), better resale value etc... That being set get whatever you want and enjoy the heck out of it.

the only things manuals are actually better for are:

    1. giving you a satisfactory feeling of shifting gears when you want them to shift
    2. feeling the power when you step on the pedal, not when the power band hits
3.stopping on ice, autos keep trying to push forward making you lose traction

I wanted the auto but ended up getting the manual. I love it until I hit traffic...Just on a side note...I wanted the short box in the double cab and the dealer told me that I could only get it in manual...I'm starting to think he might have been full of s$%t...anyone else heard of this?

I do enjoy driving manual transmissions but the modern automatic transmission is also a joy to drive.

6-speed and loving it. I drove the auto and it was one of the best shifting autos I've driven but still not enough to get me out of rowing gears.
The guy at the dealership swore up and down that the auto would tow better but from my previous experiences I've never had an auto that could tow at or near the factory limit regularly and last more than 50-75k, and even if a clutch for the 6 speed is $5-700 I could replace it atleast 5X before the cost of replacing a toyota auto transmission.
