OFFICIAL 2nd gen 4x4 front differential bearing vibration thread

Honestly, the play in my cv seemed the same, but I think that extra support keeps the cv from going crazy and giving us vibes

 

Just did the bushing at 145K with a new CV too, no mo vibes!.... My old school mechanic (alignment) believes that the slop (post bushing install) is too much and my seal will leak soon, I'm trying to tell him that it's 'normal'
But it is somewhat embarrassing considering what he sees on other 'similar' set-ups, their CVs are pretty solid...

 

Would be willing to borrow/rent/buy a puller from anyone who doesn't need theirs, or pass it along to the next guy when I'm done -your choice. PM please and thanks!

+1 for same issue and I am doing the wheel and needle bearings in one shot. I was surprised how much slop was there and also had a pretty "clicky" feeling when I spun the drivers side shaft by hand - felt like the spider gears were clicking into each other?!? Anyone else comment on if their driver side felt like that when turning by hand? My fluid was golden (replaced about 20K ago). It got so darn noisy people couldn't hear my hands free conversations ;-).

Anyone who has this tool sitting idle that could rent, loan or sell the needle bearing extraction tool to me please let me know. Thank you. I just bought my lift.

 

Finally!! I replaced both wheel bearings and also did the needle bearing replacement
With the nitro gear bushing.

And NO MORE NOISE!!

It's a pretty easy fix with a bearing and race driver, and of course the cool tool from east coast gear.

Id like to keep the tool in case I need it, but I'd be willing to loan it with deposit. Pm me if interested.

Finally installed the bushing. So far so good.

 

I had the growling noise, I thought it was the right wheel bearing problem. I ordered a new whole assembly replaced it and still have the same noise. I'm thinking it is the bearing now waiting for bushings and tool to do this replacement.

 

Hey guys. I haven't posted in a while but if you are wondering if Toyota has fixed this on new trucks the answer is no. I just purchased a '14 TRD Off Road and the bearing is loose so I will have a go at it later. Worse, the dealer I got i from had a lot of new Tacos on the lot and I spot checked 4 others (they thought I was crazy laying on the ground). They were all loose and one drooped particularly bad so it is likely going to need fixed sooner than later.

 

I almost forgot what a vibe free ride was like. Till they come back, anyway. I have a tool FOR LOAN, paypal me the cost of a small Flat Rate box, you pay return shipping in same box. Will edit with exact cost tomorrow.

I have a 2007 4x4 offroad. At around 100,000 miles I started noticing the same grinding sound with vibration in the pedal as described by others in this thread. Over the next 30k miles the symptoms continued to grow. I was fairly certain that my issue was not related to the differential because the sound did not change when I engaged four wheel drive even though I had signs of differential issues as indicated by a leaky seal and some amount of sludge found during a recent fluid change.

I couldn't positively identify that I had a hub bearing problem because I had no tire wobble or could not reproduce the grinding sound when I free-rotated the tire. The driver side sounded ever so slightly worse than the passenger side but nothing very major.

I bought a preassembled hub/bearing from TW member "nj636" and replaced the driver side. Luckily this completely fixed my problem. Feels like I'm driving a new truck now.

 

My truck is still under warranty and I have the vibration. There's lots of play in my CV axle. I just ordered the bushing. Next week I'm going to bring my truck into the dealer to fix the needle bearing under warranty and hand them the ecgs bushing to use instead. I'll let you know how it goes.

 

Be prepared for a fight. I've only heard of a couple exceptions of dealers replacing just the bearing -- typically they replace the whole diff and aren't willing to take the bearing out. Back when I tried to do this at my dealership they insisted that there was no way of taking the bearing out without cracking the diff open. Which we all know by now is BS.

Ok so I just bought a 2005 quad cab Sr5, no lifts, bells or whistles. It vibrates at highway speeds, off and on. The dealership scheduled a front end alignment and tire balancing on Monday. I just found this thread, and since I'm no kind of mechanic, can somebody give me a quick rundown of what else I should ask the mechanic to look for?

 

1000 miles and vibes are back. And again, I have a puller tool for loan. PM me.

 

Check to see if the vibe goes away when you engage 4wd. If it does, this is your issue. If it doesn't, something else is causing it.
