Oh I agree, theres a ton of good that has come out of technology, if the web & this forum had been around when i was really active in the offroad community, no telling where I'd be now.....

To be honest I had never in my life had to deal with (or heard of) backspacing, much lesss debate on it, the biggest tires I've ever run regularily were 38.5"x14.50x16.5" & those were on full sized Power Wagon & on my Ford F-250 , even on my 83' solid axle SR5 you could slap on 32"'s & you'd have to work to make them rub, older trucks have more inner well/fender well clearance than you find today..

& I'll tell you something else that probably 95% people don't know, the base model 5 lug tacomas lend themselves to larger tire placement waaay easier than the 6 lug TRD's or sports....

Personally, I say rake belongs on hot rods. My car has cut coils on the front (done right, cut with band saw and tapered edge).
As for the addition of coils on the leaf springs, just remember that if they do fail and cause damage/injury/death, liability falls on the person who installed them and many insurance companies will deny any coverage of associated cost.

Im thinkin about running some cable inside the coils as a fail safe like with garage door openers. But i really like the way it sits now that i lifted the front. Pretty much stock rake (which will plain out nicely with a boat or trailer) and about 2" up on all 4 corners

Yeah, that would be a good start. Something to keep the springs from launching down the road if they fail. You will definately know it if they do.

Back then, people weren't being sued and fined for every little thing either. If I didn't have to worry about warranty and recon/safety inspections, my truck would have a lot more custom mods.

Flexed it out and the spring compressed to about a 3/4" gap, the leaf springs also were as close together as stock unloaded/unflexed so my up travel is doing alright

I was wondering the benefit as well? Doesn't that kinda double do it with both leaf spring and coil springs? Probably better than blocks to raise it

I figure adding springs is adding springs be it leaf or coil in persuasion.

Well im 3 months in or so. Its still a little stiff unloaded, but pulling a boat or hauling washers and dryers, it is a big improvement over stock and dare i say pleasure to ride in. I have no doubt the 5100's help a lot. Welds and springs still looking good
