Brent I'm a go with one riding shotgun. I wouldn't mind hitting Shoe Creek again, good camping, Crabtree is at the end of the trail, and there are few other fire roads around I haven't been too.

    Nice links!!

I drove through a lot of JNF this weekend (121 miles of the Blue Ridge Parkway), very nice area but that's all I've done there so far....
I've done a ton of research for multi-night backpacking excursions in GWNF and some day hikes in JNF; have several trails picked out but haven't made it out yet.

Yes on the backpacking gear!! I have gear for me and both my girls but having trouble getting them on the trail... hoping this summer is "the right time".

I think that glass pack is 2.25" but it's yours if you want it.

EDIT: I went and checked it's 2.25"... Probably too small for what you need...

    Yeah... :(

As for backpacking gear, time to hit up promotive.com and see what they have... You have a favorite local or online store?

Whiteblaze.net is what you seek for info on gear.

As far as outfitters I prefer MRO in Damascus or Mountain Crossings, or REI in Richmond for larger heavyweight backpacking gear.

I've done 1800 miles on the Appalachian Trail, spent many a night in everything from Hammocks to Cuben tarps. That was my main hobby before guns and cars.

GearBuyer.com - It's a gear search engine... search a product and it'll tell you the cheapest place online to get it. Don't like that price? You can put in a price you're willing to pay (within reason, there are some guidelines) and it'll notify you when it gets that low. I've been pretty lucky there; got my wife's Osprey Ariel pack at less than half price.

Also, check out the Gear Swap section in BackpackingLight.com... there is a lot of nice stuff moving in there right now with people cleaning out gear closets and buying new stuff for this year. Plus, a majority of those people are ultralight types so all their stuff is crazy light.

I'm also a member at ProMotive but have almost always found the same prices or cheaper else where.

On the hunt now for a nice tarp tent... cuben fiber would be sweet but damn that shit is $$$$. I'll probably get a cheaper one and carry the extra weight. :(
