Today i got stuck on an angle in a water crossing, nose first with the water around halfway up the engine block, and the rear exhaust tip half in the water.
it was there for about 20 mins, engine off.

once we got it out, it was blowing steam from the obvious water ingestion in the tail pipe and it started making this strange ticking sound.

The noise is coming from the drivers side and only happens under load above 2000rpm. There is no water in the oil and you can only barely hear it when reving in neutral.

I drove home 400kms which dried the car out i guess, but the engine is still making the loud ticking sound.

I guessed tappets, but i have no idea why the water would cause this. I also guessed injectors, but dont know much about them.....

    Any help??

    btw its a 04 3.4l V6

I'm guessing water has gotten through the intake and into the engine.... not good.

sounds to me like the manifold tsb for the 2nd gen tacomas. There is a problem with the manifolds where they tick above 2000 rpm. this isnt a knocking sound you hear though is it?

No, its not a knocking sound, just a loud ticking sound that is dependant on the throttle opening and. Very minimal water would have gotten through the intake, i checked after and all was dry, however some did get in the exhaust, but still i dont see why that should affect anything as it runs fine and didnt hydro lock...

No its not a knocking sound, just a loud ticking sound that is dependant on throttle opening and revs, ie at 2500rpm and full throttle it is loud, but at 2500 and partial throttle its non existant.
    im stumped

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
A cracked exhaust manifold will create a "ticking" sound. It is possible the water cooled the manifold down too fast and cracked it.

I checked underneath the car and its bottomed out on pretty much everything, the ehaust has been pushed back half an inch, so this has probly cracked or broken one of the flanges.
Also, the rear drive shafts bottomed and ripped a zerk fitting out and put a big dent in the outer sliding yoke, there were no vibes after drving it, but im not sure if it will slide properly anymore, ill have to take it to the shop tomorow.
Out of curiosity, whats the rear half of the drive shaft worth?

I would say that 98tacoma27 is right and the exhaust manifold cracked from the manifold cooling to fast when the water hit it

as far as how much a drive shat is I do not know but I think that it would be hard to find someone that will only sell you the half you need most people are going to want to sell the entire shaft
