New to the forums but love to camp, great thread going on here. Love all the different ways all of you are using your rigs to camp. Although we mostly backpack and use our Tacoma to get us to the trail we do our share of car camping as well.

When camping out of the back of the truck I have a insulated canopy and cut two pieces of 4" thick foam as a pad shaped to fit the bed of the truck perfectly. The wife and I have a two person sleeping bag (she will kill me for this pic, she had just woken up :p) that is usually her, our two dogs, and me... somewhere on the side. Its a really easy, cheap, and mobile setup so we can just close the canopy, lock it, and keep on moving. I love this setup.

And to comment on the post above, we are usually really hot with this setup, having a decent pad or mattress is critical because of the air under the bed. Even when the temp drops near freezing we usually have a window cracked because the canopy insulates us so well.

    Just the basics
My buddy has a nissan that he uses exclusively for off-roading/camping. Having a truck cap is probably the most efficient/low cost way to sleep/camp if you're out hiking most of the time. It is a small contained area and with two people stays pretty warm. He uses thick patio pads for bedding. KISS right? Plus he can haul ass compared to me with my FWC.

If your wife looks like that after waking up in the bed of a truck, then you are a happy man. She's a pretty lady and I bet when she dolls herself up she's stunning.

Me and my 70lb lab and my roommate next to me. A down comforter and what is the best- hot water in Nalgene bottles in your sleeping bag. Stays warm all night you can move the bottle around to keep different areas in your bag warm. I slept in thermal underwear, sweatshirt and in a 30 degree bag comfortably. There was even frost on top of the topper and truck in the morning but we were comfortably warm underneath

She is a "hunting dog" (German shorthair) that is trained and amazing in the field. But damn, get that dog home and she is a champion cuddle hound, ALWAYS the last one off the bed. Totally spoiled, and you freaking nailed it, that's exactly what she is asking!

Nothing too fancy but a quick few shots from this Saturday. Just stayed for one night because we weren't sure how this place would be. Stayed at Jordan Lake outside of Apex.

I have no problem with Rangers. My brother is one. They just sometimes aren't fans of me [IMG] I live in Merced more specifically.

If you're ok driving an hour maybe more, I've stayed at Jerseydale Campground near the entrance to Yosemite. It's a primitive site nestled in a mountain community, it's free, and there are tons of roads to explore just around it (Miami Trail, Hite Cove Rd, Ferguson Ridge Trail, Merced River Rd, Burma Grade Rd to name a few). This book I bought off Amazon has been a huge help. Lots of trails East of Merced and that area of the Western Sierras.

Matt! I haven't seen you in a while. we switched our scout outings to DV from your place, been meaning to stop in and say hi. I do miss last chance canyon. How is the ugly white truck doing?

AS far as a matress, go with the 4" foam, stays warm, rolls up nice and NO LEAKS!!!

Can't afford a hotel in Summit County every weekend and want to save on driving back and forth from the Front Range, so this is our solution. Top two pictures are taking a mid-day lunch break/nap at Keystone.

Simple platform (two 2x8's and 3/4" plywood), carpeted, added 3" memoryfoam. The shell itself is a Snugtop Super Sport (carpeted on the inside) and insulates very well. I just pop one of the windows open and haven't had any problems whatsoever with condensation. We do both still use 0 degree synthetic sleeping bags.

I'm 5'9" and my girlfriend is 5'7" and we sleep comfortably (fully stretched out) diagonally in a DCSB. If each of us were any taller I don't think it would work. It's definitely not roomy by any means but it warms up nicely in the winter when it's cold. We've slept in the truck below 0 degs and have never been cold. In the summer I leave the tailgate/shell open and have an extension. No regrets on getting the shortbed, it works!

It's a set we picked up from REI. It's great and very compact. Has plates, cups, bowls, spoon, fork, and knife for four people. the lid doubles as a cutting board and the container itself can be used to wash the dishes in.
