Just did my first oil change - 2010 V6 50k bought from dealer - and this was is how my drain pan looked.....

Is this coolant/water causing the muck? I've done hundreds of oil changes and have never encountered this. Should I be concerned or should I wait until my next oil change and see what happens?

Looks like it hasn't been changed in a month of Sundays. I'd change it again soon, along with another filter just to be safe.

If it had coolant in it, it would be milky throughout. Just looks well used and thin to me

If you want to spend the money do a couple oil changes close together and see if the oil looks better, it should improve it looks like its old. New filters to help capture the gunk.

Looks like water got in it to me, also. Condensation? A flood? That is rust and water in the oil. I'd be concerned.

Might be worth checking your coolant also.

Replace your oil and filter after 3k, a couple of times, you be ok, looks like old oil , if you want to see if you have antifreeze in it put it in a water bottle shake it up, and let sit for awhile , the water and oil will separate . I replace a couple thousand gallons of oil every year and do on site oil analyst . The previous owner might of used a cheap oil . Might of checked your dip stick for oil level before changing to see if it was low.

Did that dealer give any kind of warranty with the purchase. If so, get on him fast and get this resolved. If not, get on him fast and get this resolved but wear a glove while pounding on his desk.

I bought it "Certified Used" in December @ a well known dealer and I still have some of the comprehensive warranty left. Oil SHOULD have been changed by them and they were nice enough to put the sticker in my window saying it was. It was a pretty harsh winter and I noticed a fair amount of moisture in the cap but that's not to unusual. My short trips consist of 20 mile commutes @ 55+mph so I know the engine gets hot enough. Maybe I'll make a trip to the dealer with the picture so that it's logged in their computer.

Ha, those "Certified Used" checklists they have are worthless. I bought my truck with 10k certified used. It was missing fog light bulbs, but the checklist showed it checked off. Took it back the next day and they gave me bulbs.
