CB Question

So, I have a question that I'm sure has been put out there before. I am in the market for a CB and I just want to get a gauge on what some of yall have and ny experiences you may have had in the past. Not looking to spend a boat load of money just looking for a quality CB that i can use to wheel and for meets. Aaaaaaaaannnnnndddddd.....GO!

 

got one of these on craigslist for like 30 bucks a year ago. I dig it no big whip, and it works well in semi close range.

I have the same one with a 4ft firestick. Works pretty well. I keep the antena and battery pack in my door in case something bad happens and I need to leave the truck and use it as a handheld.

That's the one I have my eye on for my next cb. Still looking around so I have not pulled the trigger yet. But, so far I'm still leaning towards that one. I want mine as compact as it can be for the taco.

 

So, it sounds like that little compact setup is the best way to go. Anyone have any pictures of what their setups look like? I am just curious where to put it and how you ran it to the firestick.

 

I ran it under the mat in the back seat. Behind the seats. out the bottom of the back window. down under the bed and out to a BAMF tail gate mount.

 

I run a magnetic Wilson 36" whip and a midland handheld cb. Works great and installs/removes in 20 seconds.

 

In my old chevy i had a 25$ cobra from walmart, it did ok for trail riding and bullshitting with friends. I'm gonna get one a little better for my tacoma though, just have to find somewhere to mount it out of the way.

you can get a DX44V or DX88HL foe like a little over $100 if ya shop ebay and craigslist. they are 100 times better than any uniden or cobra, etc. 25watts OEM! miles of distance instead of less than a mile with a 5watt off the shelf like cobra. they am and fm bands, split channels, whole nine yards! GREAT RADIOS!

if you want to use the radio almost like a cell phone, LOL and clear the channel so you can talk to who you need to talk to, these old grey 300 (also the grey 150) linear amps are very very good! also alot of people overlook the Pride brand amps, they are very well made and can usually get really cheap if you can find one.

i have tried EVERY radio, literally, about 50-75 different brands and models over the years. for the last 20 years depending on my vehicle and needs, (wow im getting old, lol), i have used only galaxy radios. i had a radio installed in about 70% of my vehicles. currently i dont have one installed in my tacoma.

also like the previous poster said, Wilson magnet mount antenna are very good antennas. a whip is of course the best but no feasible these days, Wilson is my #2 choice for sure!


also, note, linear amplifiers pull ALOT of amperage, so if you get one wire accordingly.

So, I picked up a radio from a friend that didn't want his anymore. SCORE!!! Now I just need the antenna. It sounds like the magnetic is the best route. My question is, Is running the wire through the truck out the sliding rear window a good plan? I just don't want a bunch of water running in through the back of the truck. Thoughts?

 

No to the sliding rear window, its still going to let the water in.

 

Ok. So what's a good antenna? And a good setup? I'm a newb when it comes to this area, sorry for the stupidity!

 

I am most likely going to just be doing a magnetic antenna so that I can easily remove it when I'm not using it. I just need a good spot to run the wire out of the truck. And if anyone has any recommendations of a good antenna that would be great too.

 

I ran mine through the body plug under my center console. I've got a 4' firestick. Seemed to be a popular antenna so that's what I went with. You'll need a SWR meter to tube the CB. Mine was damn near useless before it got tuned.

 

Even if it's not brand new? It's a used one. Does it just have to be tuned every time it's mounted or something?

 

Yes, has to be tuned every time something changes.

 

DAMN!!! O well. I wonder if someone will just tune it before we leave for the meet. Or does tuning have to be done like in a garage or something. I assume these meters are battery powered?
