I have a 2007 toyota tacoma double cab sport model. When taking off from a stop the truck is making a noise i believe is coming from the drive line area its a ticking noise that goes away after reaching a leveled out speed. any time i have to get on it while driving i hear this loud ticking when the windows down it just started last week. I tryed jacking up the rear of the truck with the truck off and in park i used my hand to try twisting the drive line could hear a little tic towards the transmission but not sure what to check for without taking it to a shop? I am mechanically inclined just not sure how to diagnose the problem.

You think it's coming from the back of the truck?

Idk what you've done, but check trans fluid, check u-joints, and grease them, there's a center bearing under my first gen that supports the drive shaft, check that for play, also maybe check diff fluid. That's what comes to my mind

Crap I forgot you can't check trans fluid. It could be low, it's been known to happen, but idk how you fill it. You may have to find that out from somewhere else

From your description , it sounds like a universal joint . To properly check a u-joint , you have to remove the driveshaft and manipulate each u-joint by hand . Fairly simple to check .When was the last time you greased your driveline ? There are some good write ups on here , just use the search bar ... top right

Pump grease in the u-joints first. That should give you an idea if it's u-joints or not

I would do u-joints, and the fluid flush is way overdue. Toyota changed their trans service interval from lifetime fluid, to 100k miles, to 60k miles i believe. So i would get that done ASAP. There is a write-up on here on how to do that yourself, cause machines can cause damage. If that's something you're interested in

Why can't the trans fluid be checked?

The new tacomas with the v6 have sealed transmissions, which is filled at the factory and has no dipstick. Stupid, yes

With the information from the 2 previous posts above mine I WILL NOT be buying a new tacoma. That's just seems absurd

Plenty of people running around fine haha. The Aisin transmission is a really good auto trans, you just have to maintain service intervals. But first gens are better anyway haha

If that includes fluid that's a real good deal. WS fluid is like $120 I think to fill up. If I was you, I would bring my own fluid. These transmission take WS fluid, and nothin aftermarket seems to meet toyota specs from what I've heard. You know, I bet that why theses trans are sealed, so they don't have people putting in the wrong fluids!

The u-joints used in your truck are filled with lube at the fatcory (polyurethane) and cant be greased , however they still go bad and can be changed out to the u joints that are greasable . From your explanation it sounds like one of your universal joints has failed .

The transmission used in the Sport with the v6 is the A750 series and you can change the fluid at home if you prefer .
Fortech created an excellent write up on how to properly check the fluid at home . If you are interested to see if your truck is low , click the link below

I think my problem is that working on my truck had become an enjoyable pass time (no I'm not crazy lol).
