Yeah I painted the thing gold.

The only thing that even remotely looks gold in that picture is the window on the magazine. Thats the reflection from the light above. The flat black header paint matches anodizing almost perfect. Its in weird lighting there but matches the KAK tube perfect first hand.

I understand you said it's flat black, but the lighting does make it look gold because I thought the same thing.

x2, no way I would have believed that was flat black, I thought it was an attempt at FDE using high-temp rattle can paint.

It snot perfect but I didn't see gold, lol. I will take some better pictures tonight for you guys. Keep in mind it is an 80% that was raw, so you gotta finish it yourself somehow.

I wasn't knocking it, I thought it looked pretty neat. I was just shocked when you said it was actually black and the lighting was making it look like it did.

If it was gold, I was assuming you were going for a Saddam Hussien special.

Sorry if I offended you, but different strokes. I wouldn't have put down your gun if it was gold, because it's your gun. I liked the silver/black look myself. There is no way I would have picked out flat black out of the pic you posted.

I liked the raw look, but wanted some sort of coating or protection on it. Is there such a thing as clear ano or high temp clear? Maybe the next one :D

This is actually a ceramic coating that had to bake three cycles in the oven at various temps. It was a PITA but seems like it will be very durable.

My memory is getting fuzzy in my old age but I've seen, or at least I think I've seen, clear anodizing (not on a firearm though). I'm not sure if the anodizing process is any different on a firearm vs. say an aluminum wheel. I'm curious to see how that ceramic stuff holds up.

Anodizing is clear actually. Dye is added to the solution for the colors.

    My first AR build :)

Nothing special, good entry level rifle. Aero Precision lower, Rock River Arms LPK, Blackhawk grip, PSA stock pinned, Barska carry handle and PTAC carbine upper that's been neutered for MA (flash hider replaced with YHM brake and bayo lug removed).

We've had a lot of drive by bayonetings lately, good thing we have the democrats to protect us with those laws.

even with the bayonet lug off, the compensator looks like it can do some stabbing damage. Might already be illegal in the state here.... hahah

It's for my own safety really and I'm glad the local gubment is being thoughtful enough to protect me. If this thing had a bayonet, it'd be liable to attack me any time I open my safe. I feel much safer now that it can not do so.
Yeah, that compensator could probably do some damage, it's pretty knarly looking and actually is sort of sharp. I really hope it never comes down to having to consider stabbing someone with a gun though...
