I have a 98 Tacoma and I don't have enough power . like when I am going up the interstate and I get to a hill I slow down a lot to 60 65 mph and I put it in 4th . Is there anything I can do to stay in 5th and have that power I want . Thanks so much

You can get a used one like I had on here...I think I got it for $850 or so. There is a bunch of stuff you have to add on with it to make it run better/safer. Do a search on S/C and do some HW.

New..2400 or something. Plus the URD kit to make it run real good, so another grand.

Used..you can find them in good shape with the urd stuff for 2000ish usually.

If I was to add a Supercharger, I would definitely also regear. Both items.

As BD posted,,spendy stuff but it can be done if you have the will and $$$

Then you can zip down the freeway and pull all those hills pretty easy in top gear.

Youd regear? I'm charged and the gears seem just fine. What would be your RPM's in 5th at about 65-70 with a higher gear?

Seems kind of extreme measures just to be able to keep it in 5th gear going up a hill on the highway.

    What engine do you have?

I have the V6 and can fly up the Colorado mountain passes in 4th gear no problem. And can keep it in 5th for small hills too.

That's with a fairly loaded bed as well.

Chances are your gearing is low with factory 5 sp. Mine was 358 on my 95.5. Re-geared to 456 and pulling hills easily that required down shifting before. Cheaper than SC to do. Also easier on engine! Unbelievable difference.

Need to know what size tires you are running. Also need to know if you have anything aftermarket such as a lift, skids, bumpers, etc.

For example. I have a 2.7L manual with 265/70R16 tires which are roughly 30.5"x10.5". Completely stock and with 3.91 gears, I can keep highway speeds but shes slow getting there. Also, in 5th gear at 70mph, I'm running the engine at about 2700rpm.

If I were to go up to 4.10 gears and leave everything else alone, the truck would be quicker but run close to 2900rpm at 70mph. The weight of the vehicle and any add-ons would not change the rpm's at a given speed but would effect the overall power thus the ability to maintain speed at a given grade.

Well with the. 2.7 which I what I run like they all said either regear or supercharge it and I've been looking at superchargers for awhile and plan on doing that this summer but a supercharger for our 2.7 is from LCE and it runs from 2700-3000 so your best bet would be to regear unless you got a money tree you can go out front and shake. Good luck.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
It wouldn't run that high. My Powerstroke has 4.10 gears and sits at 2500 at 70. And I think the 4 cyl Tacomas had 4.10 gears standard I believe.

well if its a 5 lug 2wd then that's your whole problem right there, I think you are supposed to have 14" rims stock so you might need to change rear end gears to match the larger tires. if its a 6 lug prerunner or 4wd then I don't know the correct tire size so never mind.

also I find when my tires are not fully inflated it robs a lot of its power

He does have the 2.7.... that motor won't keep pulling at high speeds in 5th going up a long hill.
