stabbing someone with an AR-15 will probably do more damage than shooting them with one #223 #VarmintRound

Nice. I've been eyeballing a couple different 80%'ers lately.

So much helpful info in here and and a lot of guys with tons of great advice . It's nice being able to ask for help on things without getting flamed on or anything. With that being said, I finally started my first AR budget build. The charging handle came in today and the upper should be in next week or two. Most likely going to go with a PSA BCG. After that I was gonna take it to New Frontier armory here to see how their polymer lower fits up. If no issues then I make pick up and then do small mods here and there. If not then I'll probably stick with PSA for their lowers. Been wanting to do this build for 4 years now. First time around an unexpected wedding bill came up, second time I got hit with having to pay more out of pocket for a house downpayment, and the third time around I found out the wife is pregnant. So for me this is a big step to finally being able to have one without having to drop $1k+ like most of my friends did. Plus, I like doing it this way so I can learn more about the parts and what I'm doing. Still debating on doing all black or black with earth/coyote tan.

^ can't go wrong w/ either color combo nor can you go wrong w/ PSA.

Check out "The Trading Place's" lowers. Pretty good price and nice quality for both their forged and billet lowers.

IMO building one as opposed to buying a completed one is much more interesting and satisfying!

I figured with building I'd be able to get the setup I want and have the option to do the build at my pace because it's pretty hard to just drop a grand out of pocket with a kid on the way and not know exactly what expenses may come up. Next, I'd like to do an AR pistol build and then maybe a p90 with a bullpup kit.

Exactly. I'm about 1/2 way through my current build. Taking my time on this one. I've had the lower since Sept and just got a LPK about a month ago. Haven't even started the upper lol

a couple quick tips... when installing the roll pins for the trigger guard and for the bolt catch/release, rather than hammering away on it w/ a hammer and punch, ...take a pair of vice grips, tape the jaws (for cushioning), and gently advance the screw to force the pins in - this way you avoid damaging some of the weakest parts of the lower and/or marring the finish...

...i'm not sure about polymer lowers though, never built w/ one of those...

...BTW, sounds like after you build your own, you may as well build one for the new addition to the family :D

Marring the finish... If you don't want to scratch it, keep it in a safe :p you can always rattle can/cerakote later.

Ps: build one for the little guy/gal

    This!

Usually for the bolt catch I'll put an old business card between the lower and roll pin, and use a punch w/ a detent and hammer. The trigger guard roll pins are enough of a PITA though that I won't get any more lowers that require one haha.

Get trigger gaurd that utilize a screw instead. Phase 5 tactical and seekins make some billet ones.
