lol you have no idea. I've been back and forth in the bed, hanging off the bed, running beside it, hanging out the open passenger door... Many times a day...

All while yelling into the cab at my wife driving. lol...

    Ok, end-of-weekend update.

After a ton of other tests, removing parts and such, I'll skip the many dead end details and get to the important observations.

    1. The rear right of the cab is 1/4" lower on the frame than the rear left.
    2. All observers (including me) hear the noise at the rear right corner of the cab.
    3. Further confirmation of the weight factor: My average wife in the passenger seat makes the noise. My above average (heavy) friend, doesn't, just as having no one in the seat.
    4. I hammered a 2x4 between the pinch weld and the nerf bar effectively raising the cab and bypassing the cab mount. And all noises stopped.

So! I'm pretty confident that the right rear body mount is broken, and with just the right amount of weight on it, the cab is basically teeter tottering on the mount and it rattles up and down. With no weight it pulls up and closes the clearance. With too much weight, the same thing happens except down, quieting the noise.

So, now the question, should I spend the $$ for stock factory mounts or just get the aftermarket ones? Will they make the cab less comfortable? That's $86. Factory set comes to $186, but I don't have to buy them all either, maybe say just the back two at $40 each. Or just the one but I like doing these type of things in pairs.

What do you guys think? Are there other options?

Looks like I got pretty close. I myself would do the rear 2 mounts. I say this because it might have been throwing a little extra torque on opposite mount. Plus it will be easier to do both for lifting rear cab. Glad you finally found the source!

Thanks, Andy. Yep your idea seems to have found it. Good thing this truck has nerf bars because I don't see any other easy way to have wedged anything anywhere. The nerf bar right under the pinch weld was perfect. A 5-second test.

I was reading up on the poly mounts and many say they increase NVH in the cab. My truck is a streeter so comfort would be nice, and these trucks are loud enough as they are.

Any feedback on here with the ES body mounts? Made things louder or transmitted more vibration? From searching there isn't a lot on this.

I think I will get two new Toyota rear mounts and put em in. Loosen the center ones, lift the back just enough while pivoting on the front ones, and slip the back ones in. This way no lines or wires should get tweaked by only lifting from the back.

I could also do this with just the rear mounts on the ES kit. The price is the same. Need more feedback on the poly mounts tho...

Hey Jose! I would stay with toyota mounts. I don't know about those other mounts. If they are in same price range, it would be stock for me. Weird thing is you said something about center mount. My 95 and 96 only have 4 cab mounts. 2 back and 2 front. Guess they changed. I too think it would be easier to do both rears. Keep posting, nice to hear success stories. Andy

    Hey Andy...

Your truck has 6 mounts, too. There's the two under your butt, two at your feet, and the last two by the radiator.

See the diagram on ES's instructions for your truck (which includes 6 mounts):

    http://www.energysuspensionparts.com/Installation_Instructions/Energy_Suspension/17170.pdf

Anyhow yea I was thinking the same. I'll order the two back Toyota ones. I'm more after comfort, and I don't wheel so I don't need the poly ones.

    Thanks, fellas!

Guess I wasn't thinking front 2 as cab. Took a cab off a few months ago. Kinda my only real experience with mounts. Only dealt with rear mounts 1 time in 17 yrs on my 95.5.(rust won)

    PROBLEM FOUND AND SOLVED!

As suspected, right rear cab mount. I replaced both rear mounts with Toyota OEM units. Old mount on right side was squashed lower than the left side, and the new ones were 1/4" taller than that. Easy change, cheap to boot. My fave type of fix.

    Great success!

Apparently this isn't a common thing from my searches. I almost feel like I am pioneering this type of problem. My taco is younger and of low mileage. I fear this may be due to prior accident damage of some sort. I only think this due to it not being common, and I have found some bondo/bodywork at the top corners of the back window on the cab on both sides... Perhaps this truck was hit or even rolled at some point? The doors, fenders, hood and cab all have the matching little vin plates so I have no idea what to make of it. Carfax is clean. Rest of the truck is pristine. So if it was rolled, they did an incredible job. The evidence doesn't really point at it, tho. Maybe just a mishap with some cargo because the only defects I can find are the top of the B-pillar facing the bed. :notsure:

    Whatever, it's quiet now. :D

Well not really: now for that dash rattle... Good god. At least this one is well documented 'round these parts.

Thanks all for the help and ideas. We got it!

It's probably just from age. My 99 mounts are all dry rotted. And is it the dashboard that's rattling!? That's a simple fix
