Looks like he is splitting some pretty straight grain. I've seen these around but never used one. Personally I use a 6lb Stihl maul, some wedges when needed and a piece of crap regular ax, which I will replace soon, doesn't hold a sharp edge for crap.

The Stihl maul is awesome, worth the cost. A quick file and it stays sharp. 6lb is a good weight to swing, doesn't require a lot of grunt, can just let the maul do the work. The real nasty stuff that won't split I square up with my ms361. Not worth the battle.

I use a 6lb maul head on a long axe handle and an 8lb fibreglass with a spiral wedge if it's really gnarly

Personal, I won't use a fiberglass handle. All of the ones I have tried vibrate too much for me, makes my hands numb.

I basically only use it as a sledge for the splitting wedge , but I'm like you , if the wood is too nasty I split it with the chainsaw

    LEAVE NO FIREWOOD BEHIND !

6.5 lb maul and a screen door spring wrapped around and fastened with a carabiner. Started using the spring this past winter with pretty good results. No fancy physics though.

That fancy splitting axe thing beavis put up is 1.9 kg, so about 4.5 lbs. The wood also looked like easy stuff.

I typically use a double bit axe for splitting, although I also have 6 & 8 lb mauls, 6, 10 & 12 lb sledges, and a couple different wedges. Have to agree with avoiding fiberglass handles. It isn't the vibration of the, that bothers me. They feel like they flex too much and absorb some of the energy of each hit that wood handles put into the head.

If you like the tire trick to keep the wood together, you may like this even better. Get bungee cords and wrap one around a round about to be split but not too tight. Keeps the wood in place better than the tire.

What species of wood are you splitting that you're using an axe ?

Alder, pine, cedar. Whatever I got for free, which pretty much meant no hardwoods. I did have some plum once but wasn't big enough to need to be split. I sure felt that with the chainsaw though.

Oh yeah , all that stuff splits easy

I like the 6lb maul to get fir and madrone quartered and use an axe in the woodshed if I need to trim any pieces down

For a little while, I had myself convinced that I wanted a 12 lb maul. It is a giant steel wedge welded to a steel shaft, but it wasn't a long enough shaft and the leading edge was quite blunt.

As for wood, where I was living before, maple was about the only hardwood that was occasionally free. Where I live now, there is a lot of pine intersperse with more pine around thickets of pine. Did I mention there is pine here?

I forgot to mention that I had some walnut. I was really surprised on that stuff. I was expecting it to be tough to split, and it was easier than most. Straight grain for most of it certainly helped. As it has aged a little, it is much denser than the other wood species
