Bed Mount Gear basket-YAKIMA

I have had a few requests for this...so here it is.

I had some Yakima cross bars laying arround....you can get some for about $60...lots of bike shops stock them. I cut them down to fit snuggly between the bed rails and directly on top of the slider cleat system. I then purchased some 2" x 4" u-bolts at the hardware store for a few bucks each. As you can see in the picture the yakima cross bars get snuggly held in place by the u-bolts and the cleats. Obviously you can adjust the spread width of the bars by adjusting the cleats with the bars off. I then mounted my yakima load warrior gear basket to the cross bars. I noticed that with no load the basket would bounce up and down alot...as the cross bars do flex....however once I mounted my high lift jack it quit bouncing. I ran this set up for a year with no issues at all. I wish things were a bit more rigid but I feel confidant with the setup saftey wise. I have carried lots of stuff in the basket...so the bars can handle some weight. I will say however that I just purchased the OEM roof rack and will be running the gear basket on the roof shortly.

That looks nice. A red trd on that rear fairing would look tough. I did one in silver on mine.

 

Personally, I would put the wood over the axle and the lighter bags on the rear carrier. This couldn't have handled well.

 

Are you serious PSTER? Handling was not an issue, even with 4 people and lots of gear....plus just for your info the gear in the basket was heavier than the wood...This was in BIG SUR, HWY 1 IN CA... it hugs the coast, curvy to say the least....heres a pic from last weekend near the same spot...
