What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Delta makes a "toolbox" that looks like a standard chest tool box but is actually a fuel tank. More than a few farmers around here have them. Not sure on the legality though or DOT approval.

 

That's the one I'd model it after.

Looking at vehicle monitoring stuff, which is better, scanguage 2 or ultra gauge?
The scanguage 2 monitors trans temp which is a big + for me, but I don't know about the UG.

 

UG doesn't have trans temp. But what I have been unable to figure out is where the stock sensor is located, if you have one. If it's in the pan it really does no good, you want to know what the hottest temp it reaches.

 

I saw where the sensor is located when i was flipping through the manual the other day, I'll see if I can dig it up.

It doesn't do much, but it should be constant so if there's a spike i can shut it down.

 

That would be awesome, I've looked everywhere and can't find a definite answer, even posted a thread about it here. The thing is is when the fluid reaches around 200 degrees or so it degrades very fast, i'll try to find the link I had. When hauling a load up a grade or off roading it really heats up the tranny.

And if you have a sensor it only activates the light when its around 300 if I remember correctly.

 

This is the exact reason I bought the SG2 (and the color change option)
Unfortunately the trans temp doesn't work with 1st gens that I know of, unless you found a link which has the code to put in

It does, but not the '96s and '97s.

It is actually the x code that doesn't work with those model years. I suspect the temp data is availavle from the ECU tho.

 

Not all first gens have tranny temp sensors.

 

I found a little thing on it in the manual.

I'll have to check the tranny tomorrow but it looks like it does read from the pan, better then nothing but still not giving you good numbers. Instead of a scan gauge you can download the torque app and use a Bluetooth dongle in the port, much cheaper.

 

Never mind, is not in the pan, I'll have to look exactly where it is.

Thanks, I have a bluetooth dongle and the free torque app on a old android that was given to me (I'm a apple user), but it's kind of slow on the data updates (1-2 second delay for RPM)

Seriously though, I would prefer to have a dedicated device like the scangauge, I have an ultragauge, but the app is a viable option if the delay isn't a problem. I didn't know there was a delay, I've never used it but heard good things about it.

It could be the age of my device, the fact that it's the free app, or the fact that i'm using a cheap Amazon OBD-bluetooth dongle.

 

Yeah could be. I'll most likely try it out at some point, but when I replace my tranny I'll be putting a sensor in the hard-line coming out of the tranny and a gauge in the clock.
