Agreed. My XD45 is what I grab to investigate and the 500 goes to my wife to hunker down in the bedroom.

Not to mention a pistol is harder to get wrestled away than a shotgun if a BG gets the jump on you.

Exactly. Everyone that has a firearm for home defense should be practiced in clearing your house. No one knows your home's layout as well as the homeowner.

Agreed, but those who have kids in different parts of the house need to be able to get to them without geting shot by an intruder. PRACTICE clearing your home! :)

    Not really, but here goes...

Dogs for HD=lawsuit and dead dogs when the mailman/meter reader/5yr old next door gets bitten....if it's my 5yr old, you're fucked...promise.

"I'll wait til they're 8-10 feet away, then shoot!"=you're fucked....see '7yds before you can draw'...that's how far a perp can cover before you can raise and fire with any accuracy.

"I'll empty the mag in 'em"=prosecutors dream...you can brag about it in prison while giving anti-gun legislation more meat to work with.

I'm so tired of 19yr old bravado...

Last point is the best...have a plan.
Wife and kid go to far bathroom with a phone and lay down in bathtub...I want to know EXACTLY where they are.
If it comes to shots fired, I will attempt to neutralize perp while drawing fire AWAY from my family.
BTW, I can pretty much disorient a perp in my home in the dark with just my flashlight beam. 135lumens will immediately blind them.

I do have to say however that if the mailman/meter reader/5yr old next door is in my house without permission (especially at night), they are fucked...promise. ;)

Shoot to stop. In the classes I have taken, shots fired has never been an issue. If it takes 20 rounds before the threat is stopped, then be it. If you reload 3 or 4 times, and dump every round into the threat, that may raise an issue.

This is a myth. Eyes can readjust quickly after being hit with a light up to 240 lumens.

You might want to familiarize yourself with the laws in your state, city, county....and the father of the kid your dog attacked.
Might not have the outcome you hoped for.

    WHAT?
    Here's an experiment.
At night, turn off the lights in your house, have somebody flash the light in your eyes, then try to grab them.
Let me know how it goes.
    Really.

Thats a good read. The info I gathered regarding a light as self defense, was from http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/, and there are many LEO's that disagree with what you are saying.

    paper hornets FTW.

somebody sent me something, that wasp spray works 10X better than mace does at repelling a perp. it sprays farther, it hurts more and apparently its cheeper

It's definately cheaper and I'm sure the perps can't have a built up tollerance to it (pepper spray doesn't work well (if at all) on those that eat alot of spicy foods.) :D

Really don't care about blindness because if he hadn't invaded my house, he would not have gotten sprayed. Actually can't say that I don't care, but if comes down to defending me and my family.... You don't know what his intentions are.

i'd be willing to bet that i can be 8-10 feet from you and draw down and shoot you twice by the time you cover that "reactionary gap"

when your target is less than 7 yards you should be proficient enough with your weapon that you can point shoot

as far as emptying the mag being a prosecutors dream...i HIGHLY doubt that

theres case law and plenty of precedent involving shootings in which the shooter (within his legal boundaries) fired to neutralize a threat...thought he fired 3 or 4 rounds...and went thru a full combat reload and used 31+ rounds

when your in a high stress/critical incident stage...youre adrenaline is thru the roof...your body only operates on gross motor skills...you are not able to decipher a lot of whats going on around you

on top of that...when you shoot someone...its NOTHING like you see in the movies...those little hollow point rounds just kind of sink into a human body...no bloody explosions...no thrust backwards...an adrenaline fueled shooting incident in which a normal human being fires on another...it will appear that they are not hitting their target because of this...and they will continue to shoot

i shoot to stop the threat...period

if that means 2 rounds center mass...great...if it means every available round at my disposal...fine

if i was within my legal boundaries to draw and shoot...then there is no longer an "excessive force" claim

there is no higher level of force than deadly force...and you cross into that area the second you point and present that firearm

i will absolutely NEVER rely on a flashlight to disorient an intruder in my home
