5150's? I'd say it's more common for people to have 5100's all the way around. Am I off-base here?

    just a couple comfort items.
Myself and my buddy both ran 10" 5150s out back. We are both also on Dakar leaf springs. He is still on them and I have gone another route since then. The 5150s are fine but you do need to make sure that you use a taller bump stop or you will wipe out a 10" travel shock when it bottoms out. If you are on stock springs they make the 5150 in a 8" as well. the neat thing about that series shock is you can unscrew the top eye mount and screw in a pin mount so they fit in the stock location. Plus they have a few different valve options, although they are fixed and you cant change the valving. Grab a tape measure and start measuring your travel, bump stop height and go through the 5150 specs. We went with 10" primarily for more droop and a Timbren bump stop with a 3/8" spacer to keep the shock happy and it worked fine.

Ive been looking at the 5150's as well. My truck seems to bounce around in the back quite a bit. I put new shocks on it last year, but they suck. I take it you would recommend the 5150's? How are you using them?

Bringing up and old thread instead of starting a new one. Does the difference in travel effect the overall lift. I am looking at just getting the 1.5" add a leaf and 5150's for the rear, so is there a travel size that I should stay awy from (like dont go over the 8.5")?

So I did me some measuring and it seems that you shouldn't run into any issue running 10" shocks with the stock bump stops.

I measured 2 inches from the top of the bump stop to its point of contact plus added the distance of the bump stop at 50% compression (3.5" uncompressed /2=1.75) for a total of 3.75" possible upward movement of the axle. I also measured the shock length which was ~19.25"

So a simple approximation only accounting for the linear movement of the suspension you should calculate about 15 inches for compressed length:
so if you subtract the total possible upward movement you should get something like 15.5 compressed shock length. Then I used 15" for my final number allowing an extra half inch margin.

If you use trigonometry (because the shock is actually at an angle which increases as the suspension compresses) you would actually calculate 16.1 inches... so maybe 15.5 when you account for the axle wiggling around and all. The 10 inch 5150's have a compressed length of 15.89" so these would actually probably be fine, maybe a bit close if you hit the bump stop really hard.

Hmmmm, you know this is from 4 years ago right?

Bilstein shocks have crappy generic valving if your thinking of going that route.

Even if not about bilsteins, the longest compressed shock length you can run is still good information. I'm looking for something to do a mid travel kit for about $400 for all four corners if you have any suggestions???

For that price I would look at the billys 5160, you can even get them in custom lengths
