4wd max speed?

Hey all, Jason here. First time poster, long time reader (well a couple of weeks anyway.) I am currently shopping for a new "Taco". I've done a bunch of research so far and I'm thinking v6, MT, TRD off road, red. I have One question I haven't been able to find an answer to. How fast can you go in 4wd?? My current car, a Subaru w/190,000 miles, will go over 100 in Awd. My last car, an 89 wrangler w/ 2.5 i4 recommended not going over 55 in 4wd. Where does a new taco fit on this spectrum? Also, how badly does mileage decrease when using 4wd? Lots of winter up here and sometimes I drive fast.

Well #1 4WD is not all wheel drive.

Everyone has a different opinion about driving around in 4WD on dry,wet, icy, snowy, etc... Roads but if traction sucks I recommend slowing down first of all, and using 4WD only while there is enough slip to prevent binding.

To answer your main question, in 4WD high there really is no limit. Just don't engage over 60mph, per the owners manual.

 

I work with a guy who bombs the back roads for work in snowstorms at 90-95mph in 4wd with no issues at 150,000 miles on the clock.

I notice zero difference in mileage in 4wd as measured with the instantaneous mpg readout on the scangauge.

 

I feel like you won't be working with that guy for very long.

Also be aware, just FYI...I could care less, the site doesn't tolerate discussion of blatant speeding although I'm sure you were talking about KPH. I'm also pretty sure if someone needed the extra traction of four wheel drive, typically only providing the benefit of increasing or maintaining speed and not cornering or braking, they wouldn't actually drive 100 MPH. Right?

As pointed out, the 4WD for Tacomas is part-time. It is purely a traction aid and used when conditions demand. If conditions allow normal speeds, most likely, shouldn't be in 4WD.

With that said, I've taken mine up to 65mph with no issues.

 

You can drive as fast as you want in 4wd

 

It's not the mechanicals that limit your speed, it's the conditions.

 

Only a complete retard wrapped in a moron would drive 100 mph in 4wd. But like stand above it is a good way to lessen the gene pool of idiots. As long as he does not take anyone with him when he kills himself.

 

Wow! Impressive response. For the record, I wasn't talking about going fast fast. My commute in the winter can have snow, ice, and clear dry roads all in the same day. I would feel safer staying in 4wd most of the time unless the roads are completely clear, just in case. Sounds like 60-65 with the occasional 70 to pass shouldn't be an issue. Thanks for all the input. Pics to follow when I finally pull the trigger on the truck.

 

You are correct if the roads are snow packed and dry in other spots just leave it in 4WD it won't hurt a damn thing. The speed is not limited just engaging it in excess of 60 Toyota seems thinks is a bad ideal I'm not sure of the reasoning though. As far as the guy going 90 in the snow no doubt he is from QC.
