Break controller

Just bought a Sportsman Classic and have been upgrading my 99 4x4 xtra cab v6 to pull it Have added the Firestone Air Bags and now it's time for the break controller. Anyone have suggestions on what is compatible. GVW of trailer is less then 3k. Also my truck according to the dealer did not come with a tow package. So do I need larger alt. both oil and trans cooler or just trans? I live in Arkansas so not a lot of mountain driving. Any help would be great.

I have a Draw-tite 5100 Activator for < 3000 lbs trailer. simple and cheap.

 

For that, I'd get a brake controller, air bags and be done with it. I wouldn't bother with the oversized alternator and aux. oil and transmission coolers.

Get the best controller you're willing to buy/spend $$ on. I bought a Prodigy P3 but have yet to actually use it. Not cheap but I've only heard good things. A cheap one will work, you'll just be adjusting it all the time for loaded/unloaded trailer and conditions.

I don't think you need a tranny cooler but it's not expensive nor difficult to add one. Oiler cooler as well. But, I'd go w/ the tranny cooler first. I'm assuming you asked about a tranny cooler because you have an auto tranny?

As far as the heavy duty alternator goes, I'd not worry about it until your current alternator goes and then replace it w/ a heavy duty version. IF it ever dies, which it may not.

I bought a Prodigy P2 for my Sportsmen Classic. Mine is a little larger than yours but the P2 works great.
