As long as the LBS pays whatever manufacturer whatever price they charge dealers for whatever bike, why should the profit margin of the LBS be any of the manufacturer's business?

Here's a pic from a non-downhill, non-Xgames, non-desert, non-death/dismemberment singletrack trail ride thru the woods just for somethin different....

It shouldn't. Nor should what the LBS wants to sell aside from their product.

    The better coast
Its probably why shops will have a bike stick around FOREVER.

When I was looking at a cyclecross bike I went into a shop and the owner showed me a 4-5 year old bike that was barely marked down. That makes sense now. I bet the auto industry does it as well.

I always thought owning a bike shop would be sweet, but from what I understand you make the majority of money off entry level and kids bikes. The mark up on the high end stuff isn't as high. And if you don't carry Trek or Specialized, the 2 big brands, you limit yourself pretty quickly.

If you want to find a way to go broke fast while busting your ass seven days a week, this is the way.

And unless you live in an area with year round riding, you will need to change gears with the seasons to keep the money coming in...

Anyway, I always thought it would be a great thing to do. Until I worked in one.

Shit, based on what the LBS charges for parts and wrenching, I woulda figured that would be equal or greater than what they are making off whole bikes. I personally won't buy anything other than tubes, cables, cable ends, maybe a stray bottle cage & maybe a whole bike once in a great while from shops. Certainly aren't needing or paying for any wrenching to be done. I can understand the pressures of keeping the shop afloat, juggling how the manufacturers want you to run it & giving the gestapo government their cut tho.....which has kept me far from that scene and out on the trails instead. I love repairing and building bikes but just too much doodoo that goes with it doing it anywhere but home.

I would think the margin is highest on service followed by parts and finally, bikes.

I knew a lot of friends who's parents would walk into a bike shop and buy 4 new bikes for the family. It was always the cheapest model. Then they would pay for service and simple stuff like tire changes and gear adjustments. I always told them I could have done it for free but some people are willing to shell out the cash.

Looking at either a Santa Cruz Bronson or Santa Cruz Heckler. Thoughts? I am looking at a FS MTB 27.5 for the San Diego area mountains. I will be using it for all mountain purpose.

If you can swing it, go with the Bronson over the Heckler. The single pivot suspension on the Heckler doesn't hold a candle to the VPP on the Bronson - it's stiffer, more lively, will climb and descent better and more actively than a single pivot bike.

Depends on the shop we have super good deals on service. Parts are odd because some things are marked up crazzy high while others arnt making money. Ud be realy supprised at what the markup is on some bikes

My comment was more about averages. There'll always be exceptions depending on sales agreements, etc..
