I know, I saw em... just looks so much bulkier. I have yet to ride one, but I'm scared a test ride will turn into an impulse purchase!

So if I contact action line do I just do it straight up? Or do they have a special RECON section?

6 years ago I met the governor at her "mansion" for the governor's ball.. Should have asked about the redundancies of RECON while I was there

Yeah even if no need flaps I'd try anyway. If they fail you then you will be in the same boat as me; trying desperately to get a re-inspection without having to wait 2 months..

I think all trucks going through recon with a lift will require mud flaps in the rear.

The stock ones are fine if you don't stick out.

The inconsistencies are so weird. I had a friends that failed, so he went home and took off 6 lights. Since he worked the next day, he sent his gf down to wait for them to open and got re inspected on the spot. It passed and they got the sticker.

They only have to cover half the height I the tire and the width of the tire. So the stock flap works for most people.

Well here is what I submitted to action line today..

"I am at my wits end. My truck will not pass safety because of a technicality. I have a Recon permit and have since my first modification requiring it, but the latest addition is not listed on the permit. So now with an expired safety sticker I cannot drive my truck legally. I started calling the Recon office two weeks ago and they said my best bet would be to get in touch with the inspector who had seen my truck before and see if he could fit me in since it would take only 5 minutes to update my form. I have called nine times in the last two weeks, leaving my name and number with an actual person six of those times. Each time the person who answers the phone tells me they will make sure the inspector gets the message. Each time I get no call back.

I called again this morning, and recognizing the woman’s voice as the person I talked to the second time, I proceeded to explain my particular situation to her. I have been told six times that the fastest way to get a simple re-inspection done is to get in touch with the inspector who previously inspected my vehicle. I also explained that I cannot drive my truck and have had to borrow other people’s cars because of this. Her attitude towards my situation was “tuff luck”. I asked why I had not heard back after two weeks. And with a good dose of attitude she said that “he’s has been really busy”. I also asked her how does he get these messages. She said, again with attitude, I put them on his desk. She told me the best thing I could do was to make an appointment. This coming from the same person that initially told me not to make an appointment, but to leave my name and number instead. So with her rushing me to get off the phone, I left my name and number once again. I have no hopes of hearing back from them anytime soon. I am generally a very understanding person, and always on my best behavior on the phone. I try not to let the attitude bother me, but it just adds to the frustration I have with an arbitrary and unnecessary system.

Adding insult to injury; the first person I talked to a few weeks ago said that they would be starting a new program the following week where I could just drive down and wait in a line to see if I could be seen between appointments. After three days with no contact from the inspector I decided to ask about this program the next time I called to leave my name and number. I was very quickly told there was no, nor would there ever be, such a program and if I showed up without an appointment I would be turned away. I have no doubt whatsoever that I would be done with all this by now if they would just allow walkups to wait and try their luck.

I find it ridiculous that my truck is now illegal because of a technicality, even though I have been following the law since day one. Even my safety inspector said my truck passes with flying colors and is in far better shape than just about anything that passes through their shop. But he cannot and will not pass it without that Recon form being updated. I do not fault him for this because I would not want him to get in trouble, and I don’t want to have a truck that looks legal but truly is not. I place any and all blame on the City and County, the Department of Motor Vehicles, and the Department of Reconstructed Vehicles. I would like to know why a department of people who don’t even seem to be mechanics of any kind are better equipped and qualified to tell if a vehicle is improperly modified than the ASE certified mechanic who does my safety inspections. I trust his experience and expertise more than any other when it comes to vehicle safety. Yet I am stuck hoping and praying that an inspector who is interpreting a very loose set of guidelines will rule in my favor. And only once (if) he or she does rule in my favor and gives me an updated permit, I have to go and pay $20 for a far more accurate and detailed version of what they just did.

On my last call today I asked what I should do since I cannot drive my truck for fear of being pulled over. The woman on the phone simply told me when I come for my appointment in a month, just drive very carefully and hopefully I won’t get pulled over. And if I do (get pulled over), just explain to the officer that I am on my way to get the Recon sticker and hopefully he will understand. I inferred from that that I should continue to not drive my truck: A truck that all the while requires insurance and registration to be paid for even though I cannot drive it. As far as I can tell, the City and County is not only wasting my time, and my money, but it is slowly eating away at my health as my stress levels increase with every call to the Recon department.

This whole process has been without a doubt the worst organized and least effective inspection process of any kind I have ever been involved with. I do not understand why the Recon inspection was created in the first place, why it is still around, and I do not understand why we need to keep it.

    -Nathaniel"

We'll see how it goes, but I'm not expecting anything to speed up this process :(

Sorry for any confusion, you DO need flaps, but your's will probably be 99.99% fine.. Shouldn't need to get aftermarket, but to be 100% safe, go checkers..
