I will never trust kijiji again.

So, I recently installed a PDX-F4 amp, and found that it's overpowering my JL C2-250's. NP, saved enough from the tax return that I can do a little shopping. Found a guy in Ontario, Canada selling HAT Unity 6.5" speakers for $225, overnight shipping. Awesome! Confirmed everything worked with him, and he convinced me that everything was a go. There's the first problem. Got them this morning early, thought great! I can install them, as my knee is still bugging me, and I'm not going into work. Install the sets, and turn on the radio, pass. tweeter no bueno. Great, dead tweeter. Swap tweeters to check, now both don't work. Turn it up anyway, to hear the midbass, and the drivers' side mid makes a flapping sound, surround is pulling away from basket. Finally, swap crossovers, for one last check of things, and now the pass. tweeter is working, drivers' still not working. Check the crossover, and there's white stains on the circuit board. Some water or something got into them. So now, I'm out $225, guy isn't answering emails, why should he, he's got my money, and I've put a complaint in through paypal, we'll see how that goes. But now I have to wait another 1-2 paychecks before I have enough to buy some new speakers. Man, I will never trust kijiji again. I may never buy used again. I always make sure my used stuff is in good to great condition before I sell, and always follow up, to make sure the buyer is happy. I got screwed. And HAT parts are expensive to get here in Canada. Now I know why the price was so cheap. /rant

 

I won't buy used speakers unless I can see them physically and test them with a DMM. That sucks man, hope you can get it resolved somehow.

 

Went out today, bad knee so I can't work, and listened to a few speakers from different stores. I listened to the Hertz HV165L's, Alpine Type R's, Polks, Pioneers, JL's etc. Just have to pinch some pennies to grab a new set, or talk to Hybrid about replacements, but I can't imagine that will be cheap.

 

I think you should check to see if they can rebuild them. Companies that rebuild speakers don't always cost a lot of $$$.

Hertz are good and that's a solid set of speakers right there.

 

Agreed. The Hertz HV165's are a solid choice. I've done several high end appliations with them. You can get some serious volume out of them and they sound great. I might suggest trying to get your local Hertz dealer to hook you up with the HT28 tweeters instead of the HT25's if he'd be willing. The only problem I've had with the Hi Energy speakers in our trucks is that the tweeter can be a little bit bright for my liking. Especially in that stock location. The Audison Voce speakers are also a very nice sounding set within the same price range as the Hertz Hi Energy's. They are both manufactured by elettromedia, so your Hertz dealer can order them for you.

Sorry to hear about the fiasco with those used drivers - always buy brand new when it comes to stereo equipment. Only exception I would make to this rule is if you can buy from a reputable member on something like DIY Mobile Audio to get your hands on some old school super high end audiophile stereo-porn type stuff.

 

The fact the Hertz speakers were "bright" is an understatement. I had them turn it up, and couldn't take them. But getting different tweeters is more money I don't have right now. I'm still unsure what to do, but one thing I know for sure, I have a few weeks to make a decision, unless I have some money fall from the sky for me. I'll go talk to the Hertz dealer about getting different tweeters for the HV165L's, see what they say. Thanks guys.

I just got a call from Paypal. The police visited said individual last night, and got him to admit he pulled a fast one. So, I send the speakers back to him now, COD, and he has to pay me back in full, including shipping back the junk he sent within 7 days, or he gets charged with fraud. So, I'm getting my money back! YAY! Lesson learned.

Now, I think what I'm going to do, is turn the gain down on the sub amp, to match the level of the speakers better, and try this whole thing again. If I can keep the JL's and be satisfied with the output, great! Otherwise, I'm going to talk to the people that sell Hertz products, and see what it would cost for the HT28 tweeters instead of the 25's that come with the HV165L package. I didn't like how shrill they sounded on the soundboard. "If" it's not too expensive, I'll see what I can do about getting the cash together.

 

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAND, reimbursed. Quickly transfered the cash to my account, and now on to supporting some local shops. I called the shop that carries Hertz gear, and I can get the HT28 tweeter, but I can't swap it for the HT25 that comes with the HV165L set. Cost is $189 for the tweeters, and they have to order them in. I told them to order them, and put it on my CC, don't like using it, but I'll pay it off ASAP. Can't wait to get this set in the truck.

 

Just got a call from the audio shop I was buying the HV165L from. They don't have any in stock, and would take a week to get in. They do have some older stock, that I can't listen to, because it's NOS, of the HSK165L, with the soft dome tweeter. So I may not have to buy the HT28 tweeter. I'm just wondering if anyone has heard this set, and can classify the highs? Are they softer than the HV165L tweets, being soft dome? I know the HV set comes with metal tweeters, and they were really sharp, not what I want, I'm used to soft dome tweeters. Any comments?

 

The new ones are less bright. I used to have the older version of the HSK165L in my truck before I redid my whole system. They are very bright. If you don't like how bright the ones on the sound board were, make sure you ask him what he had the tweeter adjustments set to on the crossovers for the demo. They can be set to -2db/0db/+2db, which really helps. If you are going to have to order a set, he should be able to piece together an order of a la carte items that you want. But for the price difference, you might be better off going with the Hertz HSK165XL set. The mid bass are a little bit beefier with better power handling and they come with the HT28. They are just a minor step above the HSK165's but they're worth the price difference. I used them in my truck for a while before I decided on going with Mille's.

PS, I just checked my old pricing sheets and the dealer can make more money by selling you the HSK165XL set for the same price as the HSK165 & the HT28 combined. And then you wont have to deal with trying to sell a standalone pair of tweeters. Hopefully he likes you enough to make that deal .

 

The XL line is $300 more. I tried them out and really liked them, but couldn't justify $800. $500 is $100 more than my original budget, but you really only get one chance at a deal like this. They are regularily $600 for the HSK165's. I'll probably run the tweeters that come with it, tune them down 2db with the Xover, and then work them a little more with the EQ. Save up the cash, and buy the HT 28 tweets. In the end, I still save $100 over buying the XL's and get a good set. Gotta love the price change from the US to Canada. We get screwed all the time.

 

You should try to find another hertz dealer. That guy is ripping you off. Hertz is an international brand with distributors in several countries including canada. We never sold a set of HSK165's for more than $500. The dealer cost on Hertz products is low and makes it easy to make a profit for dealers. Charging that much and feeding you BS like 'HSK165's are typically $600' is just plain greedy of that dealer. I know for a tac that the price difference from the standards to the XL's is less far than $300, as seen in Hertz' official pricing sheet. Try locating a dealer that might be willing to make you a deal over the phone and ship them to you. I'd offer to do it but we closed our doors a few months ago.

Hey shane. I can get them at another dealer for $360, but I have to keep the HT 25 tweets and order the HT28's if I want them. Not a lot of choices around here for "good" car audio shops, that aren't big box stores. I'd rather work with the smaller shops, and gain a reputation with them as a good customer, for future needs. After my fiasco with plugging the RCA's in wrong on the back of my deck, it would be nice to have a shop that cares, look over things when I need a hand. I know just enough about car audio to be dangerous sometimes.

Yeah, $600 for those, and they're special order. Have to wait a couple weeks. I'm gonna stew on it for a while, and see what I think.

 

I don't feel that the Hertz are nearly as bright as my Focal's are. I like bright tweeters though.
