unacceptable. 60mph is not an extraordinary speed and the seat hinge completely defeated the restraint system. Your truck absorbed a lot of the impact energy (obviously). Looks like he wedged under the frame. Imagine if a full-size truck had hit it.

VW had a had bunch of recalls over exactly the same problem (seats going flat in a rear end collision).

Hope you're OK. Have had a few concussions and never quite the same afterward....

I was in a rear-ender with my jeep (as mentioned earlier). My seat hinges also broke (or reclining mechanism) and I can relate to the exact situation he went through.

Not sure what you mean by...'defeated restraint system'

There is no safety features to defeat in that situation. The seatbelts still work but are useless when your body is lunging backward. There's nothing for rearward protection.

The only options, would be to put airbags INSIDE the head rest that would protect the backside of your head (in that situation). The seat hinges would have to be pretty damn strong to support your body with all that force.

Neither my father or myself are small in build either. I am 6 ft 275lbs. So I was not at all suprised with the hinges breaking. Also you have to understand that I was at a dead stop. Much different than if I had been moving at even a minimal speed. Even if I had been rolling at under 5 mph the impact would have been much less.

You'd have to be careful not to injure/kill anyone in the back seat with airbags in the headrest.

The SEAT BACK is your restraint. He launched into the rear cab wall (head first) when it failed!

Yeah, I know. I've been in an exact situation myself in a jeep. I have titanium plates in my head because of it.

The seats aren't designed to take that backward force and why they break.

The safety features on these trucks (and cars) are focused more on frontal & side impacts - not necessary rear impact. But then again..... perhaps there just aren't enough serious injuries from rear impacts and why the auto designers haven't focused on designing better seat mounts/mechanisms for such a situation.

Isn't that sort of amazing? Crash testing has gotten really elaborate, but a really basic design attribute (like the seat) gets missed.

I KNOW this has been identified as a problem before.

The importance of seat rigidity in rear-impact crashes has been known for many years. quoted from:

    http://www.seatbeltdefects.com/seatback_failure/index.html

Gotta admit that 275# is a very big boy. If he's OK with it, so am I

Bought Taco completely stock on 7/25/09. Making the adjustment from my previous truck a 04 Dodge Ram HEMI quad cab 4x4.
I'm really glad to hear you and your dad are ok!

I've been a little concerned about how my taco would perform in an accident ever since I traded in my full size truck. I'm sorry for your loss and injuries but I'm glad to learn these trucks will sacrifice themselves and save us!
