Why upgrade the rear end? Are you consistently destroying diffs? Do you just want a wider axle in the rear so that you wont have to use spacers?

The brakes are going to be your challenge when swapping rear ends on these trucks. I had a nightmare getting mine sorted and would not recommend going down this path unless you have the time and $$ to deal with all of the headaches.

Does the earlier tundra (2007-2013) have a wider axle?

Well from what I can tell, he took off everything except the bumper. I'll try and find an original pic of it.

Yes 5 lug. But you can re drill the axle easy enough.

I'm mainly looking for housing strength and width. I have a bent stock housing and need to figure out what to do in the next week since my truck is nearing completion. Getting rid of spacers would be nice as well.

I was hoping there's something that can still use my third and not have to deal with anything extensive. If not I'll just order a ruffstuff truss and truss a stock axle and call it a day. Not looking to go balls out on a rear end till it gets linked.

You have the 8.4 3rd member right?
The only thing you'll be able to reuse your third in is a first gen tundra/sequoia axle (up to 2006) or another 2nd gen axle. Yes the first gen tundra axle is only 1" wider WMS-WMS, but with spacers that will bring you 1" closer to your front width. The advantage of a tundra axle (aside from the same pumpkin) is the brake lines and driveshaft all bolt right up.

Aside from that, you'll can look at fabricated housings. Ruff Stuff makes a housing for the Toyota 8", but I believe it's for the TRD third member. A quick call to Ruff Stuff will answer that tho if you're interested.

If you want to step up to a Ford 9", aside from the complete axle, brake to brake, you'll need a pinion flange that will allow you to reuse your toyota driveshaft and bolt it into the 9". Also you'll need to do some custom brake line work to adapt the metric Toyota lines to the Ford lines.

Do you know if that 8" housing will fit the stock thirdmember? What about the rest of the stock axle parts, drums and axle shafts? Didnt know they made that might go that rout when i replace my third from east coast gear supply to get a better width
