I've been trying to get the driver side bell housing bolt out of my transmission for 2 hours. Nothing seems to work. What's the best way. We currently have swivels and extensions but cannot get it. Any ideas?

Auto or manual ?? I'm assuming auto, the bolts on top ?? You may have to pull the floor pan/trans cover that goes around shifter for access if its anything like the 1st gen... get ready for a 4'+ long extension....maybe

    This.

Been more than once I've stacked every extension owned by three guys and been under a vehicle turning a wrench with someone 10ft away reaching in from the other side unable to see the fastener but able to guide my socket onto the bolt.

Extensions... crowsfoot... hell, I've even found instances to use the old GM distributor wrench.

Of course, the whole time this is going on, there's always the thought in the back of your head "I'm going to have to get this lined up and get that bolt back in there"

Yes we've been trying every extension swivel. Tried going in from the engine bay. I held tried to get the socket on in the engine bay while my dad tried to loosen it. Jacked the trans up and down. We called it a night finally. Try to get it out first thing in the morning. Everything is removed except for the last bolt.

Not sure... Never worked on a Toyota V6 other than oil changes.
I don't remember one on the Tundra 4.7
But I think there is a coolant crossover on the 4.0.

Is your crossmember removed ? this will allow the transmission to drop down enough to get on the top bolts with a long extension and a flex socket . Helps if the transfer case is out of the way or removed first . The long extension I use is 50 inches
Why are you removing trans ?

It's been a couple years since I did my clutch, so I may be forgetting something, but I used a 36-inch extension. I may have even removed the front wheel and gone in through the wheel well to get on the bolts.

I did headers at the same time, so I did have the y-pipe removed, but I don't know if that is necessary in your case. I would probably do it just to eliminate the possibility of accidentally hitting the O2 sensors, and it's only a few bolts.

    I removed the starter too.

Got the bolt out! Yes we had crossmember and y pipe out. I reached in through the passenger side got the socket on the but and we used a series of 1 ft extensions. Now to get the trans pulled out. Had to replace throw out bearing.

Sometimes with the top bellhousing bolts I would use a wrench turned backwards from the top of the engine before I drop the transmission crossmember if there is enough room. It is a pain because you have to crawl completely on top of the engine but if there is enough room it works.

Hi all, bringing this thread back from the dead...

I currently have a 1st gen and have been ignoring a rattling sound from my truck that usually comes with mid to high RPMs for a couple years. Found the possible reason to be missing transmission bolts so I've been searching online for a clutch replacement or trans write up where I could get info re: these bolts and I found this... https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/better-clutch-for-2tr.144555/page-3#post-3188873
I believe this write up is for a 2nd gen. 4cyl...He mentions 1 bolt holds the an exhaust bracket. Is it safe to assume I may be missing that bolt?

Really if anybody can point me into a 1st gen write up that focuses on all the bolts(and removal), that'd be awesome!
