power steering flush

Hey guys, my power steering is getting bad, it whines louder than my exhaust, and it starting to make a mess under the hood, I want to flush it right out. I bought some valvoline power steering fluid a while back and it's helped a bit just from being better quality, so i'll be re-filling with that.

any tips on flushing it? my plan is to take the reservoir off and just dump it out and refill..

I would try flushing it too, but I think you are going to need a new pump. Hope I'm wrong.

 

i think a new pump will be in order. so, I'm just draining the fluid, and it's like very dark brown/black, when i put it in 2 weeks ago it was almost clear.. any ideas as to why?

 

and how do i properly remove the serpentine drive belt?

 

another thing, what can I run through the system to clean it before re-filling?

 

hmm, very good to know! thanks! right now i'm running power steering fluid through, then turning the key to on and turning the wheel and forcing it all out. it's working quite well so far

 

is there something better I can do than just flushing fluid through?

cool, and the manual says refill with auto trans fluid dexron II. I used valvoline power steering fluid. should I change it out?

 

Dexron II was replaced years ago with Dexron III. It should be easily available at any auto parts store.

 

well i'm all done, it still whines like a hoe and the steerig is kinda heavy. I guess i'll have to save up for a new pump!
