power steering flush

    Hey guys, my power steering is getting bad, it whines louder than my exhaust, and it starting to make a mess under the hood, I want to flush it right out. I bought some valvoline power steering fluid a while back and it's helped a bit just from being better quality, so i'll be re-filling with that.

    any tips on flushing it? my plan is to take the reservoir off and just dump it out and refill..

    Color matched door handles, Weathertech floor liners, bed mat, Durafit seat covers, tailgate clamp, 2016 TRD Sport 17" wheels with Yokohama Geolander AT tires , Toyota exhaust tip, Toyota/Yakima bike rail mount, Toyota wheel locks, Toyota hitch cover, Redline hood struts, unifilter on air pump.
    I would try flushing it too, but I think you are going to need a new pump. Hope I'm wrong.

    i think a new pump will be in order. so, I'm just draining the fluid, and it's like very dark brown/black, when i put it in 2 weeks ago it was almost clear.. any ideas as to why?

    That is caused by a bad pump (which I think you know already). The pump vanes get burred and score the ring they ride against. This causes the fluid to shear, shearing creates heat which in turn burns the oil.

    There should be an idler pulley to loosen. Once that is loose you can get the belt off fairly easy. If you just want to run something through to flush it quick, I would suggest a cheap compatible ATF.

    hmm, very good to know! thanks! right now i'm running power steering fluid through, then turning the key to on and turning the wheel and forcing it all out. it's working quite well so far

    No. You cannot restore a bad pump with a fluid flush or change. The only way to fix it is to replace the offending parts or the pump it self.

    I don't know if they have a "fix it" kit for those. Try pricing one out.

    Here is the breakdown of the pump. Check the last page and you will see what is called a vane pump. It is a typical fixed volume hydraulic pump. On the bottom right of the last page is what you would need, plus any seal or gasket. (from the vane pump rotor to the wave washer)

    cool, and the manual says refill with auto trans fluid dexron II. I used valvoline power steering fluid. should I change it out?

    Check the bottle on the valvoline. It may be a suitable replacement. If not, then I would switch it out.

    Dexron II was replaced years ago with Dexron III. It should be easily available at any auto parts store.

    well i'm all done, it still whines like a hoe and the steerig is kinda heavy. I guess i'll have to save up for a new pump!
