Gas mileage towing tundra vs tacoma

I tow more then i drive normally. I'm thinking about getting the 5.7 tundra. I know the gas mileage on the taco is better then the tundra, but what about the gas mileage for towing?

Would the tundra drink less towing vs tacoma since tacoma engine need to work more towing?
I tow camper and boat, with both weighing around 3500 lb each.

I have ScanGauge and it shows 8-9 MPG while towing around 65 mph. I wonder what the 5.7 tundra MPG at around 65mpg towoing 3500 lb.

 

if you want to save gas the best way is to get your friend to tow your boat for you.

 

If you do more towing then you do regular driving then I would go with the Tundra. While I'm all about my 4.0 V6 I have seen to many times where when you put a load on 2 diferent sized moter the larger moter ends up turning better #'s in mpg and performance. I have a 6x12 enclosed trailer and when I pull that thing around I get about 11-12 MPG.

Thanks for the info. I did a bit more researching and like you said, the Tundra is better on gas for towing over the Tacoma. So, i'll probably gear towards the Tundra.

 

I towed my 375 lb Honda 400EX ATV on a 5'x10' single axle trailer with a 3' gate. The Tacoma got 13 MPG towing 70-75. Needless to say, I was disappointed. It only has 9500 miles on it, so hopefully mileage will improve over time. Unloaded I get 16-17 MPG driving semi-conservatively.

 

My Taco gets the same mileage towing my 2700# camper, as my Dakota V8 got unloaded. As for 8 - 9 mpg towing.... I get closer to 15mpg @70mph.. Around 26mpg at a steady 70 mph unloaded.

 

I tow A LOT with my Taco. Towing a Kubota L3130 backhoe on an 18' aluminum flatbed(over the max towing cap.) I get around 11-12mpg, with a 2000lb empty weight 6'x10' hydraulic dump trailer with 4' extended plywood sides(grabs tons of wind) I get about 11.5 mpg and with it loaded to max towing cap I get about 10.5mpg with it. When towing 2 quads on a 6'x12' double axle open deck trailer I get about 15mpg. For comparison, with no trailer hooked up I range from about 15-19 mpg average on a tank depending on how i drive and how much highway vs city I do. Nearly all of my towing is down highways at 60mph and through the various towns here on the oregon coast. I've got pics of the aforementioned loads and i'll add them to the post when i load em on my computer
