Cumulative Average MPG with Scangauge II

Installed my new Scangauge II today and I like it. My question is about how do you get it to show cumulative average mpg?? I've read that you can set the gauge mode to display "current tank trip" is that the only way??

 

Have had mine since 2010, right at 4 years. You get average mpg (and distance, time, and gallons used) for current trip, current day, last day, and for the tank. Resets tank data on fillup for tank, but retains the other 3 date parameter data that rolls off as days pass or engine restarted. Unless they've done a serious upgrade, I doubt cumulative is available. That's what spreadsheets or Fuelly is for.

The only control I know of is that you can reset current trip during a trip. Starts everything over until the next time engine is started, allowing you to subdivide a current trip into segments, ie to get data for point a to point b, hit reset, then point b to point c, etc. Does not affect current day or tank.

To really get accurate mpg, be very careful in calibrating for distance. Do at least 30 miles by accurate mile markers (better than GPS) and recalibrate every 10,000 miles to account for tire wear. Biggest variable you will see is gas pumps. If possible, I fill mine all the way to all most overflowing a couple times a year, and reset the fuel adjustment %. BUT I immediate drive enough to burn off a gallon or so to avoid carbon canister problems. Too much variation between pump pressure, level ground, if you only fill to auto click off. Have had no problems in 47.000 miles. BTW, ScanGauge odometer is zero error in 100 miles, truck odometer is off about 4%, truck speedometer reads 2 miles high (62 when ScanGauge reads 60).

That's what I was afraid of. I've read that you can make the "current fuel tank" average mpg be the gauge reading for mpg is that true?

 

Don't have my manual, but you may have to set up a custom program for that, on the gauge I believe all you can do is go thru the list ala mph,rpm, etc. If you do a custom program, it is added to the list available for the gauge.

 

can't really do it unless:

you can do this only if you calibrate it once,
then never calibrate it again (do not enter fillups)

it will monitor overall mpg forever but...you lose trip and tank functions since you have to
stop entering fillups. in other words, makes the scanguage pretty useless for trips, tank, distance to empty....etc... if you do this

 

You could always write it down I use an Ultraguage and have several different options for viewing mpg. Current mpg, Trip mpg, Tank mpg, Cumulative mpg. You can also have 8 pages of gauges with up to 8 gauges per page
