Hamtestonline.com 20 bucks or so. Do the flashcards there for a few days and you'll pass. I'm going to have Monte and grant do it two days prior. Big cram session. It's not hard 27 out of 35 correct you'll pass. And with all of the electronic sound stuff you've done a lot of it will be review.

That is correct. Besides you can get a decent handheld for 50 bucks. That will hit all of the repeaters in your area. I've been using one in Tucson the last couple of days just playing. Dstar seems like the thing to do but it does look pricey. Get the license then we can geek out over radios.

I am sure Ill think its cool after seeing it but I doubt I will ever take time to go take a test. Seems like one of those hobbies that starts cheap and then gets expensive fast.

hand held ham would be nice. Could have used it when i was stuck in the gas hills probably... CB wasn't raising anyone on multiple channels

 

I have the icom 5100 on order, but that's pretty expensive. For a dstar radio I think the most economical mobile will be the icom 880 but for a little more money the 2820 would be the way to go. Its easier to program. You can get a handheld for a couple hundred less. Or you can not go the dstar route now and just get the 2m 70cm duel band transceiver. I have a baofeng uv-82 for around 50 bucks. Duel band transceiver 2m/70cm 5 watt output (more than a cb). Seems to work great and has received a ton of good reviews on eham.net. like anything else in life the sky's the limit on what you want to spend. I just think for communication on our little trips it would be good to actually stay in touch.

icom 880 is what i was looking at..have to check out the 2820

 

I may be wrong but with the 5100 i'm getting I think I can setup a local repeater through it. I'll have to do more research. It should be there by the time I get home.

Do you know if those will fit in the slot under the Pioneer HU?

 

I'm already planning on setting up a dstar hotspot at the house. But what I'm really going to try and do is get involved in the local ham club out of basin and help them setup dstar through their current repeater system, Which links Cody, Basin, and Meeteetse. There is already a dstar on top of copper mtn but its closed. So my guesse is you have to part of the local ham club in riverton to get access.

 

All of them are remote head. so the bulk goes under the seat and you set the control head up where you like!
