2.7L + lift =?

OK, im about to pull the trigger on a 3" lift with 33" tires. Do you guys think that thats too much stress on the engine and tranny? And its a 99 prerunner automatic 2.7L

 

I think it would be too big, I had a 2,7 before with 30" tires and the tranny would downshift often or I had to drive with O/D disengaged.
I was, at the moment, thinking about changing the diffs ratios but I doubt very much the tranny would give, they can take a lot of beating.

I guess your best bet would be to have a taco friend lend you his wheels for a road test.

I'm gonna throw in my analogy here-it takes more energy to turn a taller tire. Even MORE to turn one that's wider. Why are racing bicycles equipped with thinner tires? So take your basic bike and add big balloon tires that are taller..you gonna get tired quick! Your 2.7 is a FANTASTIC 4-banger that loves to work! But dont forget that truck is still around 4000lbs and those tires remove hauling ability and heat the tranny a little too. The guys here that own them newer 2nd gens are playing with around 240 HP so they can do it easier. The 2.7 is around 150HP. Your tranny is pretty tough so you can add breathing mods (intake/exhaust) to help the motor rise to the occasion

 

my truck has a 3 1/2 in lift, wit 33x12.50 tires, its pulls pretty good, but it does have a 5speed though

 

Hey 97-yeah my Son has a '99 non prerunner reg cab with the 2.7-and it's actually pretty dam fast! So I imagine with larger tires it would come more into its element as a truck. Mark runs your basic 14'' rims'tires on this thing and it zips around like a little sportscar! Figure 150HP at 2750lbs..it's light.

 

your truck should pull those tires fine i got an 01 with the 2.7 and i haul a trailer with 2 atvs on it plus on in the bed and it pulls pretty good so the motor is strong enough it also has 31s on it and it does fine without the trailer

 

There are several factors that figure into a decision on tire size besides engine size. Your diff gear ratio and your primary use are at least as important. I happen to have a 2000 with the 4.30:1 gears. I'm running 31X10.50s right now and thinking of moving to 33s because I'm running almost 3,000 rpm at 65mph in 5th gear. My truck will handle 33s just fine and bring my rpms down at cruise, and might even give me extra highway mileage, or at least not dropit significantly. On top of that, my speedo reads 60 while my gps is reading 57, so 33s might even bring my speedo back to true. I sacrifice a little power, that's what lower gears are for.

Having said that, I am considering 33X10.50s rather than 12.50s for the reasons cited above.

I am running 285/75/16's (33.1X11.3") on my 01 Tacoma 2.7 4x4. Its a 5 speed which makes a difference, but I get along just fine. My expectations are realistic. I don't expect it to be fast, but its also not the slowest vehicle leaving the lights. It crawls great offroad. If your expectations are realistic,and you want it lifted, I say go for it.

 

i just sold a 97 2.7 on that recall an i ran 2.5in spring spacers with 33s for years, manual tranny tho

95 2.7 3rz...6"tm lift,3" body lift, procomp lt325/60R18. its a turd in 4th and 5th gear...... hauls ass in the first 3 though

 

i got a 97 with a 3.4 v6 with 35's and it downshifts like crazy! its not bad at anything under abt 40 or 50. but when you start gettin up to 70 it def struggles!! i got an auto tranny

 

yea exactly. i have a 96 ext cab with the 2.7 4L. its got a 2in rough country lift and 32 BFG ATs. Your real problem is the automatic.... not enough control on the shifting.
My taco had some trouble on hills too though until i put a flowmaster 40series delta and now shes doing much better. gonna do the deckplate mod tomorrow too.
