Hey guys, so I've noticed a motor sound coming from the right front of the engine compartment. I believe it's this part here in the picture. Anybody know what this is and what it does?

It pretty much Toyota way to keep emission down and it recycles fumes.

Air pump. It will make a 'swooshing' noise when you shut off the engine, but that's normal...

No I don't think that's it. You might be right though. I just can't explain the noise over words you know.

I would not recommend to take it apart. Its a 2000 +or - dollar part. It is the air pump that keeps emissions down amd recycles fumes like another member mentioned above. When you start the truck up when its cold, or after its cooled down, the pump (driver) will run for up to a minute making a high pitched tone then swoosh when it cuts off .

Yup... first time you work on your Tacoma and have your head under the hood and start it up that thing will scare the shit out of you.

Oops, I took it apart but put it back together. Hopefully it doesn't break down. It goes off sometimes when I'm running the truck. It's happened a couple times when I'm making a turn and step on the brake? That's what confuses me. So maybe the sound is some other type of motor.

That pump actually injects outside fresh air into the exhaust gas at cold startup to continue the combustion process outside the cylinders. That extra generated heat makes your catalytic converter get up to operating temperature much faster to control emissions.

It's a brilliant system as it does nothing to compromise the performance of your engine. :)

very true but the more stuff like this the more it is to repair.

That sounds like might be your power steering pump and not the air injection pump. The air pump only runs when you start a cold engine, and shuts off in about a minute when it gets warmer. It's a steady high pitched whine.

I'm just glad it's not an EGR system. ;)

Yup that's the sound! Thanks brotha! So it indeed could be my power steering pump. I'll check that out.

    True that

Diesel and EGR coolers don't mix
