I think some folks have looked at it and you are in for a few grand in parts. New spindles, all the forward drive line components, and the controls. Then you have to install. IIRC...There are some threads around here somewhere about it.

All I can say is......it'd be a HUGE job, not easy, and not cheap.

You're far better off trading or selling your current vehicle and buying a 4WD.

As Brunes already said....(and I'll elaborate).... Not only do you have to buy all the components (t-case, front differential & drive parts (including entire front wheel assembly, etc), but ...you also have to think about how they'll fit in there. Are there extra or different crossmembers that need fitted in, is there different steering rack/etc that fits in there, ALL the wiring, controls to put it in 4WD

ONE WORD - (and I've never done it, but can only imagine)

    HEADACHE!!

It might be easier/ cheaper to do a Solid Axle Swap up front if you're gonna convert.

Its not that big of a deal. The Prerunner is the same chasis as the 4x4, spindles and all.
Find a wrecked 4x4, preferably an FJ (so you can have the manual transfercase)
Swap the tranny, transfercase, front diff, and drive shafts. Everything should bolt right up, and there have been a few people who have dont this on a first gen for $1000.00.

Not a big deal for someone who has access to a full garage with shitloads of tools & equipment and a prior knowledge & experience with doing things like this.

Which - I might add - if the OP had the knowledge to begin with, he/she probably wouldn't post a message on here asking about it.

Surely, it can be done....but it's probably more of a pure-ass headache for someone who's just jumping in with two feet, no former knowledge, and lacking tools equipment. Just being realistic. If it were me...screw that...I'd trade it in!!

I did it again. Got tired of paying truck payments and gas and traded in for a 2015 Honda Accord Sport since I enjoyed my 2013 Sport so much.
There are two threads I know of on TTORA forums (I believe) of people converting to 4WD.

If you're paying "a shop" to do it, you probably would be a lot better off trading your truck for a similar (slightly used if you can't afford new) 4x4. I don't know a lot about it, but know a guy that did it, and it cost him a few thousand and he did the work himself.

Exactly, there is almost NO way converting your truck to 4wd cheaper than trading.

I don't see how there could be any other way. Too many issues. (Again I'm no mechanic, but thinking logistically). If you have "a shop" do it and they're not friends of yours, I doubt the average shop would be comfortable putting in used parts off a wreck, and they're certainly not going to warranty it. Maybe mechanics don't work the way I think, but it sounds like too much liability for any business? Buying the new parts, or even used parts if you convince someone, and then the labor, would have to be 3k minimum. Find a used 4WD that has a few miles more than yours does and see if you can trade the dealership/seller.

Wow, that's definately gonna hurt ($$$).

If anything... take your truck to whatever shop and have them give you a quote on it. I'd be curious to know what they say and price it as.

Then...based on the results, make your own decision whether or not its worth converting or trading.

If you did go through with the conversion with the shop - make DAMN SURE you get a good warrantee to cover the work. Get papers signed and everything. If their 'work' fails....and you're not covered under some kind of warrantee...you'd be left with forking up the repairs yourself.

OK so can you use a 2 wd axel off a same year tacoma for a 4 wd. Broke my driver side rear axel. Trying to find a replacement and found a few 2 wd that are being parted out.
