so my mom found this truck for my little brother and although I have never done a head gasket I would really like to see my brother get a good truck that he likes. He's been through hell with spina bifita and he's almost fully recovered from his most recent operation(still in p.t.) and he really wants a Tacoma like his brother. I am willing to put a lot of my time and money into helping him get this thing going. (although limited budget)

However, I'm worried this truck will turn into a money pit and that it might not be worth it so I'm looking for advice and opinions and please don't try to buy before we do if it is a good deal.

also if he does get it should I just replace the head gasket or do a rebuild.

It might be a good deal at $2500. Have you seen it in person?

You should ask the seller how he knows it needs a new head gasket. If its spewing water vapor out the tailpipe its just as likely a cracked block or warped head. Even with it needing a new engine it doesn't sound like to bad a price providing your planing on doing all the work yourself. If your not able to take this truck for a long test drive due to its condition its really only worth scrap value.

If the frame is good and worst case scenario you need an engine. You could offer 2000.00 and pick up decent engine for 1000-1200 bucks, the outcome might be worth it.

Had to go back and look ... sure enough he stuck the "obo" in at the end.

    Check that frame good.

Offer the $2000, he takes it or meets you somewhere around $2200-2300.

And good luck to your brother and you. It's a great thing you want to do for him.
