The Harbor Freight/Eastwood style both use a crappy brass bushing instead of needle bearings on the saw shaft.

When it coes to copeing. Ive never used a notcher. Aint got time for that shit its to slow.
....More is better. do not go cheap. bend shafts and lots of rework to get them to act right....

Picked up a Hobart 175 today. Once I get my 220 plug wired I'll be in here to get advice on setting it up. I'm still trying to figure out wire speed and heat from looking at the weld.

 

Yeah no thanks I can notch faster and cleaner with a hole saw notcher. You have to set it up for the second cut with a band saw and there is a large chance of cutting it off. with a notcher you cut a hole all way in one stroke. Just wait until you have to notch 500 parts in a day you won't like that band saw too much.

 

I've never used a notcher, but no way is a band saw better, can it be used, yes, but definitely not in a production shop.

 

What kinda notcher do you have? My work has a iron worker with a notcher.

I had the JD2 BEAST and it worked well for a few years but we wanted something a little safer then a drill attached widow maker . I would love a iron worker if they could notch both sides in a single stroke. I don't like the fact you have to rotate the tube for the second side it makes it easier to notch it off center. When we notch tube we notch 500+ at the time so if I have 100 or 200 off just a little we have to grind to make them fit and that takes time. So a single stroke notch is best for production work IMO.

thats a little more reasonable. do they sell those at local stores? or are they strictly online.

 

Tons of vendors all over praxair is one but they don't stock them you will have to order it.

i just use a 14'' high speed chop saw. very fast, very easy, inexpensive to buy, and cheap to maintain. the downsides are that it is very loud, and creates a lot of dust/sparks. if i had more space, i'd get either a band saw on a swing arm (so you move the saw, not the material), or a low speed chop saw with a blade, vs a high speed cutting wheel.
