6 foot 2, 240 pounds, 1 back injury that put me out of off-road bike racing for good (back then I weighed 170), and now it looks like I got myself a neck injury. We'll find out just how bad that is tomorrow when I visit with the doc. Got a feeling this one's really bad, the ER doc did an x-ray, said my neck was too messed up to determine if I had a broken neck, and then ran a CAT scan. There's not a lot of good news in that highlighted part. What good news there is, is that the CAT came back with no broken neck at least, but I assuredly have a major problem. Did this doing yoga, a move that my teacher surely should have known was stupid, and frankly one that I should have known was stupid as well. Yoga is great, very hard exercise but if your body has gone to shit working a desk job, as mine has, it might not be the best first exercise to get into.

I need to get down to under 200. Walking and using RunKeeper to keep track of my walking. I recommend this for anybody.

Bottom line: I never watched my weight because it took care of itself. That doesn't last. Watch your weight like a hawk, eat right, exercise like a motherfucker, do the shit you know you're supposed to, or else you could wind up being fat, 47 and looking at the prospect of being an invalid for the rest of your life.

Weight loss or muscle gain what ever you goal is, I strongly recommend Crossfit and the Paleo diet. My career requires me to stay fit. I have always worked out, ran, and all that fun stuff. I never made huge strides until I started Crossfit and started to eat Paleo. I have more energy, I do not need to sleep as long, and I can run farther faster and lift more. Look into Robb Wolf Paleo. My wife is a Crossfit instructor so I am forced into this stuff.

I lost some lbs in my day dropped from 265 to 165 in 9.5 month but I'm 6' and looked like a cancer patient and now I float around 190 tend to drop down around 180 when ever I do a lot of labor. I don't really diet per say but I'm open to good ideas

I have not had any weight issues yet. I have been lucky to have different jobs that encourages us to be fit. When I am no longer a shooter/operator I will more then likely have weight issues. I hope I can continue to work out and eat right as I age.

I don't know if I could do a paleo diet, as for crossfit, during my paramedic course our PT consisted of crossfit style training, unfortunatly there is no where that does crossfit here. I am starting to look into MovNat training which you can basically do anywhere.

down to 241 lbs 44 inch waist which was surprising because I wear size 38 pants. today I did 24km ( just about 15 miles) biking in rolling hills. I haven't really biked in close to 6 years so it ended up being quite the challenge. Hows everyone else doing?

crossfit is great! My girlfriend even got into it with me. I eat like a caveman. meat, protein and more meat. I was a fat kid in high school, but I lost about 65lbs while going to school.

Lets get this thread going again. Before winter I ent up to around 250lbs now I am down to 222lbs last time I checked. During the winter I would climb the ski hill I worked at a few times a week (took around an hour to climb when I started, around 45 minutes by the end of the season). Now looking for other activities to do. I started jogging today, did about a mile or so before I gave up for the day, I guess its a start. Diet has been lacking lately, my girlfriend has an ice cream addiction so everytime we go out we stop for ice cream. also went from a 44 inch waist down to 40 inch waist

Good job Andrew! Keep up the good work! I too have been struggling with my weight. I used to be an amateur boxer and boxing kept me in shape, I would fight at 152-160 lbs and walk around at 180, which is a great weight for me. 3 years after quiting boxing and the struggle to maintain weight all those years, I just let my self go. I've now ballooned up to 240lbs. I do very light exercise 2-3 times a week but it's like I've lost all motivation. I need to get back on it and eat better/ exercise more intensely and more often.

Any one have any tips to get started jogging? It has been a few a few days now and it seems like I cant jog for very long. Right now I do just over 4 km mixing between walking and jogging. I jog for one song and then walk for the next, I do this the entire time. I've been getting shin splints, but only on my left shin.

Alright I just started couch to 5k today. It went pretty good . Also took the kayak out for a small paddle. I didn't go out too far since the lake thawed about 3-4 days ago and the water is frigid, only did about 2 miles. In terms of diet, yesterday was 2 toast with peanut butter and a coffee, then a smoothie with blueberries, banana, milk and protein powder for a snack. For lunch I had a 2 egg spinach and cheese omelette, afternoon snack was a salad and an orange. Supper I had chicken and rice and sauteed vegetables. Today is going to be comparable, with a chicken and spinach salad for lunch and possibly a pork tenderloin for supper.

Great start! Keep up the heathy meals and look at it as a way to eat/ live daily and not a temporary thing.

I'm starting to exercise regularly again which for me is 4-5 times a week. I would like to get back to daily exercising but for right now I'm proud to be where I'm at. Once I get used to the routine of exercising again I'll then Focus on my diet and what I put into my body. I typically don't eat bad but there are plenty of areas in a cut back on, like fattening condiments. One day at a time!

My meals I make aren't what get me anymore. I really prefer fresh vegetables and fruits over say chips now. What gets me is when I go into town (I live in the boonies). I did a calculation and a meal I had recently was over 1000 calories  , and that was supposed to be a healthier option. Also one of my problem foods were chocolate bars. Now I set a limit that until I reach my target weight I can only have a chocolate bar for every 5lbs I lose. OH and good on you getting back to exercising!! I wish you the best of luck!

did a 13.75 mile bike ride today, went for a hike yesterday. All in all the exercise part is coming along alright. As for the diet I am having trouble staying within my macro limit. Like today, i had sausage for lunch, was good calorie wise (was looking to get around 500 ), but it was way too high in fat. Also with friends its hard to stay within my caloric limits. I had gone up to 225 last week after not paying attention and as of today back down to 222 lbs.

I didn't read through the entire thread but I did notice the weight loss going on here. Good job guys and keep it up. I work for one of the largest FD's in the South and have been a personal trainer for the last 6 years.

For those with questions please feel free to ask. But I will simplify it down to it's easiest terms. Eat less and move more. I know you hear this all the time but in reality it is the only true effective way to lose weight this side of surgery.

There use to be a old adage that one lb of fat = 3500 cals. and that is still true. That in itself does not mean that if you eat less than 3500 per week you will lose 1 lb. there is much more involved in that process such as muscle mass and loss or gain of that.

The simple fact is this. Moderation is the key to life. Do not deny yourself the things you enjoy. If you do you are setting yourself up for failure. There is nothing wrong with going out to eat a Mexican meal, Cheeseburger, etc. once a week. Just order small portions. You still get to enjoy your favorite meals and no guilt or weight gain because of it.

Exercising does not have to be strenuous. I walk 5 miles a day which in turn burns about 550-600 cals. in my case. At my age (44) and weight (189) I usually try to keep my Cal intake to less than 2000 Cal's a day. I don't sit around counting cal's as that is also just setting yourself up for failure. You will get sick of doing it.

Smaller portions, Exercise (whatever that may be) more. That is the only true way to lose weight. Everything else is a gimmick.

Right on, thanks for the encouragement. Since you are open to questions, and a firefighter, I have one for you. One of the reasons I have decided now to get in shape, other than the usual reasons, is that I want to become a career firefighter/medic. What are some good exercises to prepare me before I apply to fire school?

Cardio. Strength is always good but I've been on the job for over 20 years and I'm now 44. I can work the guys that lift weights all the time into the ground. Just because you can lift a lot of weight doesn't mean you will be good on the Fireground. Cardio is the best thing you can concentrate on at this point.
