Have any of you guys had trouble with your secondary air pump or valve? I keep getting DTC-p1613. Sometimes the check engine light will go off for a day ot two then come right back on WiTh the same code. I blew the hose out and the driver (pump) with the air hose to try and clean it but no luck

Warranty will not cover it because its emissions related

There are some stories about failures of the air injection pumps on Tundras, something about condensation rusting out the switch valve. I know its been mentioned on TW a few time, Id try to find the threads for you but im on my phone

You know I've heard of that too. I thought there was a TSB for it on the tacomas. In fact I'm almost positive there is

They called me yesterday and told me 90% of the time that happens with the p1613 its the gas cap. So I changed it witj a new one and turned my check engine light back off. Guess ill find out in a day or 2.

The Air Injection system was a pretty major problem on the 07 and up tundras. I used to own an 07 and Toyota sent me a letter saying they had extended the warranty to 10yr/120Kmi. Apparently the system would fail, send the truck into limp mode and then the system costs $4,000 to replace. Tundra owners were pretty pissed with Toyota until they issued that warranty extension.
It doesn't seem to be a common failure on the Tacoma and that perhaps shows the difference in placement. The 5.7L Tundra had two pumps inside the pass fender. Maybe the Tundra pumps were more exposed to weather.

Federal law, emissions equipment is covered to something like 60 or 70k.
Don't let them tell you it's not covered.

Light is back on. Should I take my new gas cap back to the parts store and go get a toyota brand ? Or do yal think its the air pump? Truck has 95375 miles. I plan on going back to the dealer friday afternoon

I would definitely go with the Toyota brand gas cap. All the caps seem to be brand specific these days.
To add to my post above, The tundra used two pumps and two switching valves. So if it does end up being the Air Injection pump and/or valve you effectively have half the parts in play. But even at half the price of the tundra replacement it would be a pretty tough pill to swallow. I guess just hope the OEM gas cap fixes it.
If replacement funds and/or warranty isn't an option the guys over on tundrasolutions.com figured out a way to disable the AI system and fool the ECM into thinking it didn't need to turn it on at startup. So no check engine light. You may want to check and see if you can adapt the solution to the Tacoma once you verify that it is the problem.

The light went back off on the way to toyota friday and they said next time if it comes on to drive it to them, not to even worry about making a service appt, and the service manager said it very well could have been the gas cap. They couldnt diagnose anything with the check engine light being off. Thanks for the information TW.
