If he can only learn one in all practical purposes I would learn mig. Hardly any hobbiest has a tig welder, and if Ben wants to actually fab stuff or weld on the truck it's going to realistically be mig. I would learn what I would be doing.

It's a lot harder to do awkward upside down tig welds, like when you are on a truck. Mig just makes more sense for the hobby, despite how much fun tig is

That or stick welding cause you can get DC stick welders to run off the truck ha

 

My buddy stick welded my hangers on lol. As he called it caveman welding ...which it is lol

The benefit is the arc welder can use adapters to run off a 110 wall outlet and bump it up to 135 or whatever. Much smaller and more portable unit too.

The draw back is that it burns so much hotter. So good luck welding body panels or thin metal with a stick. That would be a pita haha. Also less precise as takes more time, like we had to do 2 passes with for the creepers with different sticks to get a solid weld

 

Usually when you have to weld something back together in the middle of no where to get your truck home..probably wont be body panels haha

But yes I agree. Not super useful. But strong as shit if done right.

 

K but it just makes sense to get good at mig so you can work on the truck. So you will spend all that time learning a skill you can't hardly use unless you go buy a tig welder I guess. You have mig welded, but didnt they look like shit? Get better at that

I'm not saying that. But clearly you have done so much welding with varied machines you must know best.

TIG is great for a lot of stuff. But not ideal in so,e situations. I'm with you. Learn so e TIG. Be easy to translate to mig and I'm sure you'll get a mig first anyways and get good with it before a TIG.
