Changing the plugs and wires on my Tacoma this morning and while I was removing the intake tube the seam separated from the filter box and the tubing.

Is the "glue" factory or did this happen to the previous owner?
Obviously a seam inbetween the filter and the throttle body does me no good. Just glue it back together or should I replace this?

    Thanks

yeah, that's a previous owners handywork right there. You could do the same to fix it, or spend a few bux more at a u-pull it parts place. If you intend on keeping the vehicle for any length of time, I would say fix it right the first time and be done with it.

Thanks for the input. Yea, it didn't look right to me. The thing is, the previous owner , who was also the 1st owner before me took great care of this truck as far as PM goes. Records from day 1.
I'll "fix" it today and run to the junkyard near my house.

    Thanks again.

The piping the MAF plugs into isn't damaged so I am unsure as to why the gasket maker was applied. I cut off as much gunk as I could and used duct tap for now. I am a huge fan of 5 min epoxy so I may go that route.

Definitely the previous owner. Same thing happened to mine. I just used duct tape until now. Found the whole new box for $55 on ebay. Try to use epoxy to fix it or duct tape, however the heat from the engine will make the duct tape sag.

A cautionary note from my experience with those air boxes. We replaced one that was split in the same spot, with an OEM replacement box. The new box developed a hairline split at the same spot again within a week. Sent it back and got a replacement box but this time I also ordered a new "rubber" air intake hose.

I am convinced, having compared the new rubber to the old hardened rubber hose, that flexibility is key to the health of the air filter box connection. If you envision a rigid pipe, as opposed to the rubber hose, connecting the air intake chamber on top of the engine to the air filter box connector, you can see the box connector is the weakest link and would be pulled apart by the minute flexion that occurs as the engine torques over time.

The new hose had much more flexibility when compared to the old which was nearly rigid by comparison. This was on a Tacoma V6 with about 150k on it. 11k miles later the new box is still good.

I am convinced the rubber air hose is the real culprit in these boxes cracking (that and poor box design).

    Cold Air intake.
The name is a misnomer though, the factory intake is a cold air intake as it pulls air from the fender well, an aftermarket (K&N, Volant, ECT...) intake will pull warm/hot air from around the engine.

Previous owner was probably changing plugs like you and tore the thing initially by pulling and tugging on the tube as you did trying to loosen it. Design flaw.

JB weld along with 5 min epoxy can be used to fix many, many things. Stronger than duct tape for sure.
As an example, i knife pierced a hole in my SS sink. I used some 5 min epoxy to seal it up. That was 4 years ago, no leaks, ever.

The design of the intake piping is weak for sure. I would like to delete all the unnecessary "boxes" along the piping as well. I may look into an aftermarket set up

I think the resonance boxes and echo hollows on that tubing is over engineered. Nice and quiet at full throttle, but it suffers from the crappy flow at full sing. The resonance might be tesla-ing the plastic over time.
