Had it for a while and after all those years still a sweet ride. Excited to take both her and the Taco for some trail riding.

Quick question about racks for a mtn bike.

I no longer have my Tacoma (still frequent TW btw) but I need a rack for my suv. I really don't want to take the front tire off, but I don't have a hitch either for a hitch mount. My dilemma is I'm a short dude 5'5", my suv isn't necessarily tall, more of a cross over, but will I hate life trying to life my mtn bike up there every time I ride, I probably would have to bring a short step stool.

    Thoughts?

I hate to say it, but I have both types roof & Hitch. I have always liked hitch more and for your height its a no brainier. Spend the extra $1-300 for the hitch and you'll be glad you did.

    Yeah.
I agree. U-Haul has good prices on hitch receivers. eTrailer is great to work with as well. Depending on your SUV, you may find one that bolts right up.

That's what I was thinking as well. I would much rather have the hitch, but that's $2-$300 then another $300 for the bike rack itself.

    Yeah.
Checked U-Haul for a few SUV's, and their hitches are only about $150.

Roof racks start adding up as well.

Check your local Craigslist for sure, my buddy got a smoking deal.

What hitch racks do you guys recommend? Not sure if it would clear my spare tire and fuel cans anyways.

    Yeah.
I love my Thule T2. Comes with the locks, Yakima charges extra.

They make receiver extensions up to 18", not sure if that would be enough with all your stuff back there.

Thoughts on the bike racks that use straps on the rear of the car? I had one on my Jetta a long time ago, seemed to work. Never used one for a suv though.

Thanks! I'm debating a hitch mount or on the roof.

Those straps can deteriorate over time from being tight and exposure to the sun. I had one on an old 4runner and the straps broke. My race bike fell off on the highway. Bent both rims and bars. DONT do it....

Any recommendations for roof rack trays that are fork mount? Yakima has a few options, just not sure what's better than the other.

Go with the hitch mount... Thule T2 is the way to go.
