truck diagnosis (bad) and poll on class

hey, today i was drivin my truck in BFE, my friends and i were headed back to their house, after a stop sign i accelerated to 3000 rpm, then the rpms cut to 0 my dash lit up with warning lights and my power steering, brakes, everything was gone (made me run a stop sign and scared the shit outta me cause i almost nailed a truck) the truck cranks only if you have your foot on the gas, and you cant take it off the gas or it repeats the above symptoms, what could it be?



and for the poll, i am taking my 2 year degree in automotive systems technology, i payed 150 for all 4 semesters and 117 for my book, out of my pocket, all non refundable. my teacher said we have to buy our own tools and preferably the snap-on master set with a tool chest all stored on the campus garage. i need help paying for the tools and have a bank account with 5k for college, however my mom says i cant use it because its only a 2 year degree and paying anything over 500 total is rediculous for college unless it is something for nursing and such. i found a snap-on masters set with a tool box for 2,200. is this a good deal or would it be a better option to drop out?


(my mom said it would be better for me to drop out, but i am trying to some how change her mind)

im dont mean to sound ungrateful but if you can do such a thing id rather you do it for someone who truely needs it, my mom doesnt like my career paths i am choosing and no matter what the price she will be dissatisfied, i can eventually find a way to do it, i just have to convince her first


as for the codes, none have popped up, it just did that lighting up thing when you are fixing to crank your truck when it dies

i try my best to respect her, im just trying to do what i need to do to get my degree, just the whole not being able to get my college money out of the bank just because i didnt choose a path she wants deal irks me, ill come up with it somehow but thanks so much for the offer

 

Ask your teacher why he recommends the Snap On master set. I'm sure you could get by with another brand for 1/5 the price.

 

Although snap on is a great company, I don't see why you need to spend that kind of cash. Ask the instructor if there is an equivalent set through craftsmen or kobalt. Even though they are cheaper they both have lifetime warranty.
As for school, you need to sit down and explain to your mom this is your life and your career. You are now old enough to be making responsible decisions in regards to your life.

 

if college is that cheap why wouldn't you stay in college man? Unless thats a typo im thoroughly impressed. A single class alone where i'm at is 800 bucks for one semester. Thank god for scholarships.

i'd do whatever you can to stay in school. These days, everyone has a degree.

 

No joke, at the prices you listed, an automotive education seems like an excellent investment. That kind of knowledge will ALWAYS be in demand.

There is abundance of people in this country who have 4 year college degrees that cost 10x what you're paying and can't find jobs.

Tell your mom that nursing is an excellent field right now, but might not be so lucrative anymore if we all get Obamacare.

your mom has the wrong state of mind, if thats what you want to do and become then stay in school for it. School is expensive and a two year course SHOULD be more than 500 dollars no matter what your taking, you have to remember that the tools will last a lifetime they arent just for school.

 

forgot to mention that if you want to be a mechanic you will be going back to school soon to learn the fundamentals of electric cars, they are on there way in

One thing I've learned about the economy these days is that a college degree does NOT help you get a job. There are so many people with degrees right now that they just can't all find jobs in their field. Worst is when they have huge student loans expecting to come out of college making 90k, but get stuck working for much less, with huge loans looming overhead. Boulder, CO is the most educated city in the country (highest number of advanced degrees per capita), which is great, but all it really means is that the guy making your burrito probably has a PhD.

Service industries, like automotive, plumbing, etc., are what economists call "non-tradeable" positions, IE, you can't hire a plumber from China, or even another state, even if they are cheaper - when you need one, you need one now, and they have to be local. The same is true with broken cars, broken computers, broken electrical wiring, leaky roofs, etc. These types of industries have a certain level of protection from recession. People might put off some car repairs a little longer during a recession, but if someone needs their car to get to work, they'll get it repaired, no matter what the economy (and some people will get MORE repairs, keeping an older car going instead of buying new).

Trades may not be as glamorous sounding as doctor or lawyer, but my advice, from someone who has taken a very circuitous route to my modest success, is that the most important thing you do is to take the time to learn how to do something you enjoy, and learn to do it WELL. People who are dedicated, work hard, and take pride in the work they do will always find success and satisfaction, regardless of their field. You may not make as much as a lawyer, but you may find yourself with more job security, more happiness, and fewer ulcers.

Expect to keep learning, expect to keep taking classes as new technology comes out, but if you take pride in your trade, these will enjoyable, instead of frustrating.

Its the same way up here in canada except if you go to college for anything in the town im from you pretty much get a job coming right out of school. Its not the same case for university, I know many people with university degrees(which cost so much more than college) that cant find jobs that have anything to do with what they went to school for. So I recommend college over university any day, unless you plan on becoming a teacher or doctor then go to university.
