I don't enjoy driving a stick in the stop and go traffic of Houston, but outside of that I live it. I think the pros outweigh the cons.

I have had a 2nd Gen with a 6 speed since 2006. 200k+ miles on it. If I had it to do over again, I would go auto.

There are good things and bad things about this manual. I would buy a manual again. The two things I don't like are the crap throttle hang and I wish the gearing was a little different. 4 5 6 could all be a little taller while reverse and 1 could be shorter. Funny thing is the gearing is actually great when you are pulling something with some weight (except R and 1). I like cornering and to me that is impossible with an auto. The manual just makes driving more fun. I also think your more connected to the vehicle when your driving a stick working a clutch.

You just have to drive it more like a truck. Seems like it likes to be driven two ways; shifted a little slower than a gen 1 or drive it a little more aggressively;).

I mostly agree with you, I shift slow and the throttle hang doesn't bother me. Really wish our 6th gear was .79 (as in the FJ) rather than .85.

For most of my city street driving, I treat it as a 4 speed - 1,2,3,6 by 40mph.

Standard here. It is my preference over the auto. There are some things I would change. One is 6th gear. It should be as some have said .79 rather than the .85. Also 1st and reverse should be lower and reverse being much lower. In normal driving I only use 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 6th and I shift at 1500 RPM. When backing my boat down the driveway, it is about 300 feet, I put it into 4L to get the lower gearing.
Off road the truck did great, but I do understand that the standard is not for everyone.

I've got a 6speed. Need to re gear, but it's good enough for now. Never have owned an automatic.

Was there a change to the manual 2012+? I have a 2006 6 speed, and so far haven't had any issues with the throwout bearing. Did they stop using aluminum around the bearing?

I love my 6 speed, though I agree and wish reverse was lower and 6th was taller. The only thing I would change is having a 6 speed manual DCLB. I'd buy that in a heartbeat.

I like my 6-speed. It is a slow-go shifting through the gears but I am nearly never in a hurry so I couldn't care less.

I wouldn't have it any other way. It took the dealer about 2 months to find me a manual trans. I'm a heavy equipment operator and what I drive OTR has 12 forward & 3 reverse gears at a top speed of 48 mph. A few of the younger drivers never learned how to drive a manual trans, but they learn quick.
