Hey all, I'm planning on welding in an aftermarket muffler to my stock exhaust system and figured I would have the shop chop and turn down the exhaust either in front of or right after the axle. I was concerned with drone if it was chopped in front. Anyone done this and have you had issue with it?

Drone would probably be more related to the muffler. I have an aero turbine 2525xl turned down before the axle and have no drone like my jba catback had that wasn't even dumped.

Mine is chopped after the axle housing on the turn down. I have stock exhaust.

I have the MBRP exhaust with the turn down before the axle, no drone. I like it before the axle only because I dont have to worry about it getting banged up by the axle itself.

Did that change anything other than where the condensation pools on your truck? lol

I wouldn't think it would change the stock exhaust too much

Most people chop exhaust to get it out of the way so it doesn't get smashed up when off roading. Getting the tail pipe away from the lower quarter panel is the idea. It's not a performance mod.

Thanks for the comments and info. I'll probably chop it before the axle with an Aero 2525xl.

I was just wondering if it sounded any different...

The condensation is what makes me not want to have it under the truck. If i ever pinch it, i'll move it.

So What i heard is CA smog doesn't care as long as:
    1. You have a Cat converter. (CA Type)
    2. You have a muffler
    3. They have easy access to your tail pipe to put the reader into it
    4. I read your tailpipe cannot exit the side of the vehicle between 2ft - 11ft off the ground. (my truck doesn't meet this but still passed smog.)

I didn't like the muffler being cut underneath my bed so this is what i did. I used the stock pipe and just re arranged it so it would go over the frame and out the side of the bed. It sounds 10x better like this than it did when i had it just cut under the bed.

Edit: I did have to move my muffler like 8" closer to my cat to be able to do this. Since this picture i have cleaned it up a lot and it looks a lot better now IMO.

Gotcha, I didn't mean to seem condescending. I've run dumps on one of my Mustangs and it was louder, but other than that I didn't notice any difference.

I cut mine on the down slope after the axle. No need to add a turn down. I remember seeing somewhere that you were supposed to have 18" of exhaust tubing after a muffler. Don't know where. I have seen plenty of vehicle with shorter exhaust tubing and they don't seem to have negative results.

Haven't had to smog it yet. I will in 2016 but it's after the muffler so i don't see why it would matter.

    What do you mean?

Superfluous question, Patrick; your sig didn't load fully when I asked that. Was wondering about any CO inside the camper.

The last time I was in a muffler shop, they refused to route the exhaust before the rear wheel, stating that it was illegal for them to do that.

i had a muffler shop do the same to me. truth of the matter is that they don't really know if it is or not. so they won't do anything besides stock. They would have to take liability if you came back and said this didn't pass smog.

but there is still a chance you won't pass.. If I would end up not passing for that then you probably went to a BY THE BOOK smog shop and could probably just give a different place a try. They will fail you right away if its for that i think and hopefully wouldn't charge you.
