This is what I sleep on most every night:

Old-school Coleman bag, inside of that, a Thermarest ultralight air mattress, and a proper feather bed, which is doubled over. !!!

That's plenty of mattress, even for a truck bed. I don't feel the ridges in the bed floor at all.

Still, I have another bag on top of that, and a thick wool blanket. And a couple fleece blankets that are normally stowed.

Having spent many...MANY...nights up in places like Desolation, Shasta, the Cascades, and such...with lesser gear, in the dead of winter...My rig is more than enough to cope with the cold.

That said, I'll have to get back to all yall on how my setup performs in places like Alaska. :)

Ive looked at a similar harness, being able to tighten it on both sides would be nice. I would just try to hang in the same one before you buy it. I don't know anything about that belay device but its probably almost the same as an atc so it will work just fine

Im going to, videos of all the rapids and pictures of anything else. I'm not sure I'm doing this through work. I dont know if they've had to wait on the permit that long or not but they do this trip every year or every other year. There are only 2 permits a day so a year wait doesnt surprise me.

I went and looked at everything at REI and really liked it all. I am with you on the waiting for a deal. I missed Mossejaw's 30% everything sale a few weeks back :( I haven't climbed in years (10+) but I am hitting the rock gym later this week with a buddy. I'll most likely be sticking to the gym for a few month to get back into it and gain skill but I do really want to get into outdoor climbing.

I have no problem buying only new gear. The gear for climbing is inexpensive then other hobbies I have haha

reminds me of one I saw...something about the definition of camping being "because being warm, clean, dry and comfortable is over rated"

so this weekend i had a major issue i hiked part of the at trail and some connecting trails....
stayed at a shelter along the trail.....
problem really really miscalculated how much water was needed
it was a longer hike then expected due to some minor miss guided steps.....
temps were allot hotter then expected.....
and i left my life straw in my day bag.......
no metal cup to boil water......
was severely dehydrated by end of hike on sunday to camp site
to the point where i was light headed, down right dizzy at times
    was hoping for rain
i was on the verge of drinking untreated from the small brooks in the area.....
    this will not happen again.....
after making it back to camp it took me about 1-1/2 hours to fell right again
im sure it didnt help that i was wasted friday night and took off early next morning alone while the 2nd member of the hiking party would not wake up and i was not going to ruin my trip by sleeping all day...
overall had a great hike.....it really brings out your senses alone in a desolate area in bear country

found some other hikers brand new phone and was able to get it back to him via park rangers which was nice as well.......

so what are you using for hiking water filtration ........
think i am just going to buy a few more life straws and just keep one in each bag so this does not happen again......
i like the life straw as we have lots of streams and brooks in the northeast and south...
    whata u all think

    here are some pics

Life straws are a great back up. Maybe even a primary, IDK. I use a pure katadin when the water could be funky. If we're high up in the Sierra just tablets or nothing at all.

Rule number one when hiking, especially when hiking alone: always double check the inventory of your pack before you leave and make sure your essentials are intact. Just because you think you've packed certain items doesn't guarantee they'll be there when you need them. And in the case of water always have a back up plan. Have at least two methods to sterilize drinking water - a filter, pen, tablets, etc.

Do you have the 10 essentials?
    water/treatment system
    compass& map
    sunscreen/bug spray
    insulation (jacket,pants, extra socks)
    shelter
repair kit (for shoes, poles, pack, tent)
    headlamp/flashlight
    1st aid
    food
    fire kit

I was told that if you're dehydrated and you have no choice but to drink unfiltered water then do so - IF, only if, you're within a day or two of returning to civilization and medical treatment (if needed). Choose wisely though - go to running steams and make sure there are no signs of animal activity in the area. Winter is the worst time to drink unfiltered water, bacteria can survive in the cold and are usually at a higher concentration as they will be in the open water and not in the ice. You're more likely to die from dehydration than any water borne illness if you are able to seek treatment. Also, if you are running low on water DO NOT EAT. When you eat your brain automatically tells your body to send any available water to your digestive tract to aid in digestion and can actually trigger the symptoms - dizziness, lack of concentration, confusion - of dehydration much quicker.

Yes, all 3- big, bulky and about $70. I picked mine up for less than half that. And that was about 12 years ago. My girlfriend is more comfortable filtering unless we're up real high. We just moved to Arkansas and don't trust the wAter sources where we've been.

I did a bit more reading on the life straw. That thing is pretty awesome! I believe I'll be getting a few in the future.
