Duratracs summer wear

I just talked with a guy from the tire company and I wanted to order the duratracs to go on my XD revolvers. He made me question the tires by saying they are a soft tire made for winter so you may not get as many miles out of them. I think I already know the answer, but how do people find these things wearing? Different than any other tire? I live in Maine so it's not like it gets to hot for very long up here.

Or do U have any other ideas for tires that may be better with the same type of tread? Thanks!

 

Duratracs are likely made of a soft rubber compound which is part of the reason why they wear fast during warm months and grip well in the cold. That said they are not a winter tire around here, in the land of snow and ice. They are a soft All Terrain tire by my understanding. Goodyear makes a proper winter tire that has much better siping than Duratracs.

 

I just want a nice all terrain tire with some decent tread. They guy recommended fierce attitude but who wants a tire with barbwire and that name on it. I ain't no cowboy!

 

Lol... i am currently running Toyo Open Country ATII. I haven't had them long, but I like them quite a lot. They have a more modern tread design that evacuates water well and has moderately aggressive tread. I ran the 'almighty' BFG AT KO before these. I found the rubber compound in those much too hard. While they might last forever, they gripped very poorly on wet roads and in slippery conditions. They have a nice tread for offroad grip, but lack in every other way.

The Michelin AT and Firestone Destination get great reviews, but I have no personal experience with them.

The Hankook ATM has a nice tread design as well.


Edit: if you want a more aggressive looking AT that begins to look like an MT, see the Cooper ST Maxx. It is a bitchin lookin tire!

 

neither of them seem to have enough tread for me. I would like something similar to the duratrac, but thats prob not possible.

 

Cooper LT tires typically have the deepest tread. Something like 19/32nds of it. The ST Maxx is pretty gnarly if you ask me.
Nitto Trail Grapplers are a pretty gnarly AT too, but hey if you like the Duratrac's you should get 'em. There is a whack of guys on here who swear by them. I am surprised they haven't sprayed all over your thread yet

Goodyear Wrangler Authority (available from Walmart). Very similar to the Duratrac, but a slightly harder rubber. So far I have 20,000 miles on mine in harsh desert summers and some Tahoe winters and they look almost new.

 

get the duratracs, i had them for about 50000 miles commuting in sunny ca weather, never wore badly.
They last a decent amount of time, longer than my dunflops

 

Yeah I have seen those. Not bad... any other options for an aggressive A/T

are the Nitto Trail Grapplers a lot more aggressive than the Duratracs? How do they wear and hum compared to the duras

 

The Hankook dynopro atms are great tires. I was running them on my 4runner be for i bought my taco. They worked great in the snow, ice and rain. I used them a little in the mud but not much, but they cleared out well. I never had a problem with grip. They also look great.

The Cooper ST Maxx are great too. At work we have them on a Ford F-350. They work excellent. They have been well tested in the mud, sand, snow, ice, and rain. They clear out great and grip great. oh also this truck hauls around a 25 foot trailer every day, while driving in these conditions.

Oh both of these tires are really quiet on the road.

 

I was leaning toward the Trail Grapplers...but in a 265/70/17 it says it takes a 8.5 rim max.. mines a 9 in... that may be an issue?

 

I would go with the Duratrac / Authority / Safari TSR long before I would go with Nitto.

I have the nitto trail grapplers.. they are great tires but have worn a bit faster then i hoped for.. A buddy has duratracs on his taco and they are wearing great so far, actually makes me jealous

 

hmm. I would have thought the Duratracs would wear faster than the Nittos

 

Partly brand preference, and partly side by side comparison. One of the nearby patrol units to me ran the Nitto's for a while and they wore noticeably faster than the Goodyear (or Goodyear subsidiary) comparative.

 

duratracs it is I guess. Nothing but good reviews on them. Should have never second guessed myself years ago when I knew I wanted them.

 

While how a tire wears will obviously have something to do with it's construction, how they are used and the habits of the driver will have a lot to do with it as well. Trail Grapplers and Duratracs are clearly designed more for their off road use. I would not expect either to last remarkably long if they see a lot of pavement.
