    Sure you can.
Maybe not on all of the challenges... I can't participate on all of them even with the D7100, Lightroom, and now PS Elements.
But I've taken some great shots with my Galaxy (can't post them in this thread unless they are entries) doing nothing more than using the in-phone cropping.

Also look for the iPhone version of Camera FV-5 Lite. It adds a lot of the functionality of a DSLR to your phone camera.

Two good free editing programs that I've used for years are Gimp and Paint.net

Oh man.... The D3200 is very nice, but the D5x00 is a LOT nicer.
There's so much more that you can do in-camera, including an interval timer ($60 accessory).
Of course, once you get to that point, the D7100 package with the 18-140mm zoom doesn't cost that much more but gets you a LOT more camera.

I used my 3100 for about 7 months. Wanted to upgrade, and was ready to pull the trigger on the 5200 (5300?)... But then I saw a sweet package deal on the 7100 with a $500 instant rebate and there was no question on the best bang for the buck.

Not sure if it's still available, but I had it on good word last March that a certain TW member is offering a practically new 7100 for a steal. I would have gone for it but the package deal was a bit better.

Another thing to keep in mind is that the most recent (Nov '13) firmware updates for the 3100/3200, and I am assuming 3300, disabled support for aftermarket battery packs and battery grips. With the 7100, you can still use an $80 battery grip and the camera properly reads the charge status of aftermarket batteries.
Batteries? Not such a big deal. $50 for a Nikon, $25 for aftermarket.... considering you're likely only going to invest in 3 or 4, it's not a deal breaker... but the Nikon battery grip is a few hundred.

Also, the 7100 (and I believe the 5x00) support the WiFi plug-in module that allows you to not only transfer files to your smartphone, but also to run live-view and control the camera on your phone.
I've got the adapter on order for my 7100. It will be very nice for shots where I need to put the camera in a position where it is difficult to use the viewfinder or LCD.

Don't feel bad... last July, I was telling Buzzard that the 7100 was way overkill for a beginner/intermediate... but really, it's not.
The 3x00 is a series that a beginner will be happy with, and an intermediate will quickly grow out of.
The 7100 is a camera that an intermediate will grow into, and a beginner will be a bit overwhelmed at first but will quickly learn.

First thing to remember... turn Auto-ISO off and use the camera in program mode. I had a lot of moonscapes come out way more grainy than they needed to be because I left auto-ISO turned on, so even when I put the camera in manual mode, it kicked the ISO up to 32000.
But even with auto-ISO off, when the camera is put in "Auto" mode, everything is automatic. Program mode allows control over ISO and a couple of other options, but runs the aperture and shutter in auto.

    There ya go....

$1396 for the D7100 with 18-140, extra battery, shoulder bag, and a 32gb memory card. $300 off on the deal.

You'll want to upgrade to 64gb and add a 2nd card. The 7100 has two slots, and can use them in one of 3 ways... overflow, mirror, or JPG on one and RAW on the other.
Now, 64gb will hold a LOT of 24mp shots (800 or so?), but running in mirror mode can save a vacation from a corrupted memory card.
It would suck to get back from the vacation of a lifetime and find out that ONE ERROR on your SD card rendered the memories yours alone with nothing to share.

I was looking into the d5300 but its also a matter of price. With as little knowledge as i have, i think the d3200 will hold me over for a year or two and be cheap enough that i can outfit it with accessories.

I'm also of the mentality that if i'm spending $200+ on a camera, it better do phenomenal pictures and good video. But thats just me, some people would buy camcorders or gopros for video but i haven't wanted a gopro yet.

Coming from a point and shot into dslr, I bought a canon T3 and a 18-135 lens, and have been very happy with it for two years. I am thinking upgrade though. Don't get caught up in a gear craze right of the bat. Buy something you can afford easily and see if its something you really like. Also, buy a book, I like understanding exposure by Bryan Peterson. Turn your camera to manual mode and play around and have fun.
Being the challenge thread, we should probably take this to the general photo thread.

Adobe makes a version of Photoshop lite for iPhone called PS Express. When I got it, it was free on the app store, might still be.

Gives you ability to crop and apply a handful of effects and filters.
