    Hello all,

I have read a bunch of the front end growl/hum threads on here but I just am not sure what is going on still. I have an 05 with 265/75/17s front is stock the rear has leaves off a 5 lug which stand about an inch taller than the 6 lug leaves that were on it (and were broken). I am from Maine but just had to drive to Indiana my step father is having emergency brain surgery. About 1000 miles into my trip I started getting the hum. it starts at around 40 mph and then continues until I slow down again to about 20 mph. it sounds like it is more on the passenger side. It does not stop if I switch into 4H it does not stop if I am turning right or left. I jacked it up and I didn't feel any wobble in the bearing but I also don't know much lol. I am in a jam here because I will only be here for a couple days. and then I have to drive 1200 miles home so I would like to figure it out asap. I really appreciate any insight you guys might have.

Also I messed with the cv shafts on both sides. The feel the same on both sides. A little play in and out. No play left to right or up and down. I brought tools with me so if I can figure it out I will fix in in the driveway.

    Thanks again guys

Also there is a slight vibration almost not noticeable in the gas pedal and steering wheel. No unusual vibration while braking.

How many miles on the Truck? If you have never replaced the front wheel bearings than I'm pretty sure that's your problem. I believe on average most 2nd gen Tacomas have front bearing problems around 80-100k miles, mine went bad at around 90k miles. Mine also made a humming noise .

I hate to say it, but sounds like bad bearing(s). 1200 miles is not a good distance on bad bearings, if that is the case. If you can verify if bearings or not, I can see about overnight expressing you one or two, depending on what your needs are. Then you can just swap them out. Let me know what you find. PM me, or email (marionb2bauto@gmail.com) or you can call my cell. 334-247-5430

Thank you guys for the replies! There are 146,000 miles on it. I do not know if they are original ( I find it hard to believe they are). I think that is it too but I just couldn't feel any wobble when I jacked that side up. How much do bearings run anyone know? I think I have all the tools with me to do it. I just did my LBJs about 5000 miles ago and I think I brought everything I used for that minus the press of course. I have not noticed one wheel being warmer than the other. Should I go run it for awhile and see? Should I just replace both sides at the same time?

Mine had no wobble either but when I would rotate the tire by hand I could hear a slight noise/raddle and so I knew they were bad. They are not easy to do because you have to have a machine shop press the new bearing into the hub, but there is an individual in this web site that is selling the complete hub with bearing already pressed on them (just a little pricey imo) and so you can just swap them, but you would still need alignment though. good luck man, yes do both sides while you're there.

I had to laugh because right in my signature is the cost of my preassembled units that are simple bolt-in units. lol.

So I have been trying to figure this out I will be heading back to maine next Tuesday so I need to figure it out. One side is not hotter than the other. Both sides are buttery smooth when you rotate them no noise at all. There is zero wobble in them even when I put a bar under the tire I got no play at all. There is no play left right or up down in either cv shaft. there is a little in out travel on both sides....a little more on the passenger side but I cant imagine that is making the noise. I really am having a hard time thinking it is bearings when there is no wobble and no rough feel or sound when rotating. I had a friend who knows his stuff check and he also agreed the bearings on the truck seem to be solid.

Could it be my tires for some reason. It really sounds like tire noise but I put these tires on about 4000 miles ago and this is the first I have heard this noise. I am really nervous about heading home not knowing what this is. What else can I check?

I think I have the exact same problem sounds exactly like tire noise, but it stops making the noise for a split second and then continues. I have 4x4 6speed v6

Mine gets louder as I speed up.

I Guess I will check for play like you did...

It did end up being the front right wheel barring. I replaced both of them and when I got the right one apart it was toast. Thank you guys for all the help. It really boggled my mind that there was no play in the wheel and no noise or grind when rotating the tire by hand. Anyways I got it all changed out and never had another problem with it. THANKS GUYS!!!!!

Couple days ago I noticed a slight vibration in my gas pedal. First thing I thought was bearings. A month ago when I got an alignment I asked if I had any wobble or any noise or whatever up front and they said everything looked great.

Now that the OP had same problem as me, yet still had a shitty bearings, tells me it's time to change them out.

I have an 05 with 110,000 miles and I've never changed them.

    Guess it's time.

Yikes. 1200 miles (highway miles!) on bad bearings without having a wheel fall off is pretty lucky! Glad you made it back home safely.

I went to school with a Mawhinney in the Farmington area...Now I'm racking my brain to try and remember if she had a brother or not... :frusty:

Mine is at the dealer right now, they are putting in a new steering rack, and checking bearings because I have a nasty vibe that is getting worse by the day. I have narrowed it down the the front driver side. 42k miles.

Yeah, thats good. I've been to the dealer with this truck more than all my other vehicles combined. I'm on my 3rd PS pump, and they are replacing the rack today. The leaf spring tsb. I'm on blower motor number 3. This wheel bearing(maybe). And I only run 265s, and have only been on them for about 20k miles. I like the truck, just not the issues I have had. I am really thankful too that my dealer is cool to work with. They are a little slow sometimes, but have always helped me out, so I dont complain.

    WOW!

I've had 4 vehicles in my 41 years on this earth (I baby the shit out of them)

This truck has been unreal. I'll never steer away from the Tacoma (unless they fuck up the looks of it) and I have been knocking on wood ever since I bought her in 07 and so far so awesome!

I make sure the oil is changed every 3000, if I hear a noise or feel something shitty, it's gets looked at right away. I changed the spark plugs when manual said to (even if they needed it or not). The previous owner (1 owner before me who put 40,000 miles on it and never did any TSB's  to it) had it in excellent shape when I bought it (he had it for less than 2 years).

So all in all I am very fortunate to have NEVER taken it to the dealer and it hasn't failed me once.

:)pray: please lord and baby Jesus don't let me jinx myself :D )
