Why no diesel

    Why are there so few (basically none) choices for diesel in a small/compact truck? they're super efficient and clean burning compared to gas.
    My Dad has a 2005 f-250 (4 door, short bed) 4x4 with the 6.0 (diesel), driving from Ms to Ca yesterday he was cruising 78 and getting 18.3 MPG (hand calculated), if I were to cruise 78 I'd be getting 14-16 MPG in a smaller, lighter, more aerodynamic truck.

    Basically my question is, Why are so many people afraid of/against diesel?

    Some people don't like the idea of a hybrid :notsure:
    And a diesel/electric hybrid would take several years of R&D before it could be put on the road, whereas a current diesel drivetrain could be adapted to a new vehicle.
    No reason diesel/electric couldn't be a few years in the future though.

    There's already a transmission that is setup for electric hybrid use and can handle the HP and Torque a diesel engine designed for a truck would put out?

    Land Cruiser has a diesel / electric hybrid

    Intake, exhaust, lift. Typical stuff.

    The issue is our Government and non-sense emissionsstandards... The diesel R&D is not very cost effective when you have to change your engine every other year to meet new standards.

    Marketability more than anything else. Ask any American what they think of diesels and they either still recall the crappy 70's-80's GM's, or they think of the rednecks we have around here who drive super duty trucks with the 6" tailpipes (and never tow or go off-road) spewing soot everywhere. Modern diesels are clean and quiet, and a smallish truck or SUV would be great, but nobody will buy them.

    like said above, mostly the government. Same reason caterpillar stopped makin on road diesels a couple years ago, tired of trying to meet the rediculous regulations. In the '90s a full size diesel pickup was averaging around 20 mpgs, and by the early to mid 2000's when the government started implimenting emissions on them the average dropped to the 11-14 mpg mark. When the rest of the world is mostly running diesel vehicles what other reason is there that were not.
