Ive read a lot of the threads but Im still not sure what im looking for. Stock TRD double cab 2014. I figure the best way I can spend my money is not getting a lift but some new rubber. Truck is my daily driver(12 mile twisty mountain road) to work. Maybe a few trips to the canyonlands and Moab a year(2-4 hour drive). I will be using a studded snow in the winter so although it should be ok in the snow it is not a major concern. Off roading mostly to get to trail heads and camping with some moderate mountain trails like Imogene Pass. Been looking at Toyo at2(mt's), Duratrac's, maybe bf goodwrench at ko's. Thinking stock size because I do not want any rubbing. Seems like there is no reason to get 17 inch wheels? Any suggestions besides these tires?

    Thanks

Assuming you have a TRD Off Road with 16" wheels, the largest tire size on your 16"s w/out lift to avoid rubbing is 265/75 R16.

There are tons of threads on here. 'Search' is your friend

Duratracs are a big heavy tire. They look super bad ass though, and are good in most conditions. At least they have been in my 1st Gen

    Too few to list.
Yep, A/T and M/T's look cool but heavy for mostly road use. I suggest Firestone Destination A/T's or DynaPro's or even Nitto Terra's.

^^ great all-around tire that lasts. not the most grip for off-road but if you don't crawl it should suffice

I had the Destination ATs (2 sets) on my 07. Now I have Cooper ATPs on my 13. ATPs look better but the Destinations did everything better. Wet, snow, clearing themselves all better. That said I am going to give the Toyo AT2s a try on my next set.

I recently did a wheel/tire purchase and I went with Cooper Discoverer S/T Maxx in 265/70/17s on FJ steelies and with the removal of the 'in front of the front tire' mud flap thingies I get no rub at full lock. They fill out the wheel wells perfectly I think. They're an aggressive A/T tire and they're nice and quiet on the road.

The offset of the FJ steelies make for a nice stance as well.

Im sort of in the same boat. I just put on some Falken Wild Peak A/T's. $149 apiece. I dont live offroad, so they'll see a fair amount of highway, but I still want something that can perform offroad. So far they're super quiet on road, handle great, and still have balls offroad. Give em a look!

Looks awesome man. Those tires look great, maybe too heavy for me though. I'm digging the bestop as well. Might be one of my next two mods. Along with a bed mat.

I got the offbrand, I think Dee Zee, bed mat and it works perfectly. It has cut outs for all of the tie downs in the DCSB version, but it doesn't for the Long Bed.

    Imogene Pass is "moderate"?
...try Black Bear Road just across the valley...sorta.

What would you call Imogene? Not interested in black bear. I have lived in the Telluride area for 16 years and have hiked and biked black bear many times but have no desire to drive those switchbacks. Most of the passes around me are not too bad but in the early summer when they are still snowbanks along them they can be wet and slippery. Thanks for all the recs. Its a lot to consider. Still love the look of the duratracks and the price seems good on tirerack.com. Also with new rims can you run 17s on the trd offroad?

    Thanks

We drove up Imogene from the Telluride side once in a 4WD S-10 with a popup camper on it. Had a Keeshond dog in the back that was getting tossed around all over the place, finally put her up front and wifey held on to her.

We came upon some flat-landers that had rented a Jeep from San Juan Tours. Their Jeep was on it's side in the road. They'd been trying to stay away from the cliff-side edge and got so close to the uphill side that the Jeep rode up on the bank and fell over on it's side.

None of the 4 were seriously hurt but they didn't have a clue what to do.
Finally someone with a winch came along and dragged the Jeep back onto the road so it could be righted. They didn't want to drive the Jeep down, but didn't want anyone else to drive it either...insurance don'cha know.

Anyway the guy was big enough he finally pushed his way through them and drove the Jeep down to the flats where they walked down and got back into it.

Tomboy is an interesting place. Hard to believe the militia, mine owners and union miners had a real shooting war atop the pass in the dead of winter.

    Those Coopers look great!

I've got Toyo Open Country M/Ts on right now (came with the truck). I don't really need an M/T here, but I love the way they look. Those seems like a nice compromise.

One more vote for the Cooper ST Maxx, I love mine. They have been great in everything so far. I haven't gotten a chance to test them in deep snow and ice. The only thing I don't like so far is that they seem to toss rocks quite a bit.

Really like the looks of those coopers. Looks like they do not come in the 265 70 16's. Does anyone know if the 265 75 16 fit a stock tacoma without rubbing?
    Thanks

I think that's effectively the same size as mine. I already had the mud flaps off so I don't know if that's required, but the flap in front of the front tires absolutely has to be removed. Going backwards and turning made a horrible sound. Now at full turn nothing rubs.

My go to for my last two trucks have been 245/75 10 ply BFG A/Ts. They are great on the highway in the winter and summer as well as playing off road on moderate trails during the summer. I have never had a traction problem in the winter, and in most conditions they performed just as well as the studded tires I used to run on my old Dakota. I currently commute 30 miles over Vail pass five days a week, as well as driving lots of passes and two lane mountain roads in the winter. They are a bit louder than some but I am currently at 70k miles on the same set between my old dakota and my taco. They were around 900 installed during a sale at Discount and I have another set ready to go for next winter in the garage.
